The recent Fenton River Clean-Up was successful with 24 volunteers, and next year it will have a new coordinator. Mayor Pro Tem Cheryl King said, after 24 years, she is passing the reins to Councilman Brad Jacob.

She appreciates the community's assistance over the years with the annual Shiawassee River clean-up, King said. This year's sponsor was ELGA credit union on North Leroy Street, which supplied T-shirts for the clean-up volunteers and food.

The Marathon gas station on Silver Lake Road donated ice, the Fenton Department of Public Works supplied a truck, the Fenton Beautification Commission served doughnuts for the volunteers' breakfast, Cottage Inn Pizza supplied refreshments, and Tractor Supply Company donated gloves for the volunteers.

The clean-up, which took place on Saturday, June 23, resulted in a TV and VCR being pulled from the river near a bridge, said Councilman Ben Smith.

In past years, a bank safe was found under the water, King added. Because of years of annual clean-ups, the river is getting cleaner and volunteers are finding less items.
