Fenton Film Series Extends Into Summer
Next showing will be Urban Roots on July 13.
When the curtains first went up on the Fenton Film Series in September of last year, organizers hoped the community would enjoy their movies and that the series would continue through May.
To their delight, the ongoing event’s unique mix of local food, live music and thought-provoking film proved to be too much fun to stop for the summer.
It was officials from SLPR, however, who encouraged Fenton Films to extend their series through the summer at the Fenton Community & Cultural Center.
“They thought the two movie series complimented each other and offered the public more opportunities to come to the downtown area and enjoy the community center,” Strayer said. “The Fenton Film Series sponsors were all very enthusiastic about extending through the summer.”
The forthcoming lineup promises to live up to the high standards set by the young film series’ first nine months. The Fenton Films Series features a potpourri of independent, classic and documentary movies not often offered by theaters. This July will feature the Detroit documentary Urban Roots about the resurgence of farming inside Michigan’s major metro area.
“We are very excited about this opportunity,” said Strayer. “This is the first time the Fenton Film Series will be screening a new film which has yet to be released to the general public.”
The heart of the Fenton Film Series is community, and the summer dates will offer plenty of that as well. The monthly event has screened film shorts by local filmmakers such as Timeless by Steven Coffee and Little by Little by Peter Putnam, both of whom are Fenton High School graduates. The series will continue to provide viewers with local foods and live music by area musicians.
The Fenton Film Series takes place on the second Wednesday of each month. The doors open with food and music at 6 p.m., and the movies begin at 7 p.m.
The remaining summer schedule includes:
July 13 - Urban Roots
August 10 - The Tillman Story
