Meteorologist Says 1.5 Inches of Rain Fell in 20 minutes in Fenton Area

The amount of rain and the time period it fell in place the storm between a 50- and 100-year rain event.

The official update from the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac is in, and the 50- to 100-year rain the Fenton area experienced Tuesday resulted in 1.5 inches falling in 20 minutes, said Danny Costello, a hydrologist/meteorologist.

"That's very torrential," Costello added.

The amount of rain and the time period it fell in place the storm between a 50- and 100-year rain event, he said.

Linden received a little more rain than Fenton, and the storm was the same one that passed over the Durand and Burton areas as well, Costello said. These areas had between 1-2 inches of rain.

Fenton Department of Public Works employees tried to help the precipitation drain into the stormwater systems in the city, but the systems were overloaded by the downpour, DPW Supervisor Dan Czarnecki told city council on Tuesday.
