Re-Cycling My Freecycle Excitement

It was recently brought to my attention that while I posted about our local Free-cycle group, I did not post how to join. It is easily found on Yahoo! Groups. Here is a link to the direct group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Fenton-LindenMIFreecycle/

You must have a Yahoo! account to join, they are free to obtain. Also, there are a few security questions that you have to answer. Once your answers have been reviewed by the moderators, you can feel free to post your unused items and the location of them (such as Fenton, Linden, Holly, Dibbleville area) along with a brief description of each item.

Some recently freecycled items include: some used golf balls, a desk, filing cabinet, children's items and non-working appliances, brick pavers, and office supplies.

This is a group of people dedicated to keeping unused items out of landfills and getting the most of them. I highly urge you to join if : you have a garage or storage shed with extra stuff, a basement with extra stuff, kids, plans for a garage sale, or want to de-clutter yourself in a way that is good for our city and planet.

Thanks for doing such a great job with your blog! The more members, the less great stuff goes to the landfill.

My apologies Kelly. There is a new freecycle group in town as well, it is located at Freecycleplus.com and you do not need to request to be a member. I believe it is just as busy, if not more so than the Fenton-Linden freecycle group, and encompasses most of Southern Genesee County. I have joined and am very happy to be a member. The group operates on a points system so that you can "bid" on items. You obtain more points for inviting new members and offering up your own pieces. Check it out!

I am sorry that neither of the groups I suggested sat well with you. As I am not the moderator of either, I can not comment one way or the other as far as how they are run. I know that I have truly gotten some very interesting and needed items from both groups, and saved dozens of items from garage sale heaven or a very sorry spot in the back of the truck. I am happy that your experience has not left you turned off of freecycling entirely, and had I more thoroughly researched this other group, I would have been more than happy to include it's information in my post. Thank you for the information, I am sure there are others in the Fenton area who can benefit from it.

Terri,
I moderate both the Fenton-Linden freecycle group and the New Southern Genesee County Freecycle Group. I keep all correspondence that I have with a pending member.
Below is my response to Kelly K K:
"Hi kelly,
the Fenton-Linden freecycle group is transitioning over to Southern Genesee County freecycle. To join, please go to:
http://freecycleplus.com/southerngenesee
Thank-you!"
Regarding the "other" Fenton group, yes it has larger numbers, but fewer posts than 3 different freeycle groups that surround it.
Bottom line, Kelly wasn't happy with the new group, which the Fenton-Linden group is transitioning over to. Thankfully she has found a group that meets her needs, and that is all that matters :)
Thanks again Terri for spreading the word about freecycling and the new Southern Genesee County Freecycle group!

Regarding local freecycle groups, there are many. There is the Holly group, the Southern Genesee County Freecycle group (which the Fenton-Linden group is transitioning over to and why pending members are being referred there), the Hartland group, and further south the Livingston freecycle group. To the north there also is the Flint group. I moderate 2 of the preceding.
For anyone interested, you are welcome to check out the Southern Genesee County Freecycle group at: http://freecycleplus.com/southerngenesee
Our goal is to not only freecycle but to do it in a fun way. Currently we have a "Mystery Box", valued at $100+ being circulated through the group. It contains back to school items such as a TI calculator, HP paper, flash drives, pens, pencils, etc.,
Further, anyone can belong to as many OR as few groups as they would like. And Kelly, I think it's terrific that you have found a group that works for you. Quite often in the freecycle community a member belongs to multiple groups or if not happy in one group will find one that better suits them.
Bottom line whichever group a person belongs to, great stuff is being recycled rather than going into the trash, and that is TERRIFIC!!!
