Baker College OT Grads All Pass National Exam

FLINT, Mich. – Baker College Center for Graduate Studies officials have announced that 100 percent of its 2013 graduates with master’s degrees in occupational therapy have passed the national occupational therapy certification exam within six months of graduation.

Certification is required for licensure in every state in the nation and allows therapists to use the title of occupational therapist registered (OTR). The exam is administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).

“This achievement of our occupational therapy students is the outcome of a team effort by faculty and staff to provide the highest quality education,” said Jo Anne Crain, Ph.D., OTRL, dean and director of the master of occupational therapy (MOT) program. “The 100 percent pass rate well exceeds the requirement of our program’s accreditors.”

Baker’s combined baccalaureate and master’s degree program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). It requires a minimum 80 percent pass rate by students on the NBCOT certification within one year of graduation.

Baker’s MOT program prepares students for entry-level practice, national certification and state registration or licensure. Coursework revolves around problem-based case management, grounded in theory, scholarship and hands-on clinical application.

Occupational therapy practitioners work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, schools, nursing facilities, outpatient rehabilitation clinics, long-term-care facilities, home health, academia and many others.

According to a May 2012 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report, employment of occupational therapists is expected to increase much faster than the average for all occupations, growing 33 percent between 2010 and 2020. Median pay for an occupational therapist was reported as $75,400 per year or $36.25 per hour. The lowest 10 percent earned $50,500, and the top 10 percent earned $107,070.

Only students who have been accepted into and complete the pre-occupational therapy program at Baker College of Flint are eligible to apply for the MOT program.
