Fenton Lions Host Peace Poster Contest

Jack Haynes, a 7th grade student at A.G. Schmidt Middle School, Meredith Good, a 7th grade student at Lake Fenton Middle School, and Bryce Murray, a 7th grade student at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School, have taken the first steps to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning local competitions sponsored by the Fenton Lions Club. Haynes’, Good’s, and Murray’s posters were among more than 140 entries at the three schools and among more than 375,000 entries that will be submitted worldwide in the 26th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the contest to emphasize the importance of world peace everywhere.

The winning posters were selected by Fenton Lions Club members based on originality, artistic merit, and portrayal of the contest theme, “Our World, Our Future.” The judging was held on November 13th at Fenton United Methodist Church.

Fenton Lions Club President David Dipka said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at both schools. “It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions of the future.”

“Haynes’, Good’s, and Murray’s posters will advance to face stiff competition through the district, multiple district and international competition if any of them is to be declared the international grand prize winner,” Dipka said.

One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize includes a cash award of $5,000, plus a trip for the winner and two family members to the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners will each receive a certificate and a cash award of $500.
