Livingston Dems Showing 'Inequality for All'

A film that examines the widening gap between a handful of the rich and the rest of us will be shown by Livingston County Democrats later this month.

“Inequality for All,” a documentary by Robert Reich, will be shown on Friday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. at party headquarters, 10321 Grand River Road, Suite 600, in Brighton.

“This is an important film about how the growing concentration of wealth in this country has hurt the middle class and the economy as a whole, depriving the middle class of the purchasing power we need to keep the economy growing,” said Judy Daubenmier, chair of the Livingston County Democratic Party.

“This film is not about attacking the rich, but about showing how policy changes have made it harder and harder for average people to get ahead, undermining the basic American belief that if you work hard and play by the rules that you will be better off.  The film also makes the case that having the 400 richest Americans own more wealth than the bottom 150 million combined is a threat to our democracy. That should be a concern to everyone.”

In the film, Reich lays out how making a few changes in our economy could reduce income inequality and result in a more vibrant economy for all, as well as a stronger democracy. Reich was Secretary of Labor under President Bill Clinton. He is a foremost expert on economics, a best-selling author of 13 books, and the Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at University of California at Berkeley.

An audience discussion will follow the film. There will be no charge for the film, which is open to all Democrats in the county. Donations will be accepted for refreshments. “We will be serving pie for refreshments because we believe the middle class deserves a bigger piece of the economic pie,” Daubenmier said.
