Fenton Drug Prevention Group Seeks National Impact with Chasing the Dragon

Chasing the Dragon will be filmed live at The Freedom Center on Sept. 22; tickets for the performance and a hip-hop concert are available online.

The Fenton area's anti-drug presentation, will be roaring into town on Sept. 22 for a filmed, live performance to bring it to a national audience.

Area high school students and local residents have watched it, and organizers want to spread the message further by providing DVDs to schools around the country, said Tony Brown, of , Fenton Township's drug prevention and awareness group.

The performance is to help students overcome negative influences of drugs in their communities, a Sept. 6 press release states. focuses on opening lines of communication between students, parents and teachers.

"We need to break down the barriers," Brown said.

The performance and DVD are being spearheaded by and the Genesee County Sheriff's Department, with Neu Luma Public Relations. Schools and organizations around the U.S. can request copies of the performance, Brown said. also will be available for viewing online at http://www.communityparent.org. It's being made possible through a grant the Genesee County Sheriff's Department received, to combat drugs.

Organizers want people to understand how pervasive drug use has become among teens, he said. And they feel the urge to continue in order to repeat their initial, one-time sensation, which is called "chasing the dragon."

"People become addicted relatively quickly," Brown said.

And drug use doesn't discriminate based on factors like gender, race and socioeconomic background, he added.

To build a larger audience, a hip-hop concert is being combined with the live filming of Chasing the Dragon. The concert will feature nationally known hip-hop artist Json, David Michael, The Michael Maher band, Oaker Parker and Chelsea Hudson.

"I hope we get people there," Brown said, of the performance.

It will take place at in Fenton. So far, more than 100 seats have been reserved for the show, he said. He anticipates an audience of double or triple that number.

Audience members can reserve their tickets for the show, which is free for students and costs $1 for adults (see details below).

Refreshments will be available, through community donors.
