Former State Senator From Fenton, Phil Mastin, Passes

 A former Democratic state senator from Fenton, Philip Mastin, has died.

Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. flags within the state Capitol Complex to be lowered to half-staff through Dec. 15 in honor of Mastin, who died Nov. 28. This is in accordance with Executive Order 2006-10, V. K. Flags should be returned to full-staff on Sunday, Dec. 16. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.

“The Great Lakes State has lost a dedicated leader and passionate public servant,” said Snyder. “I extend sincere condolences to Sen. Mastin’s wife, Donna, their children and entire family during this time.”

The memorial service is 11 a.m. Dec. 15 at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Leroy St. in Fenton.

Mastin began his public service career in the 1960s after working as a designer in the automotive industry. During a 25-year period, he served the people of Michigan in various elected and appointed positions, including Hazel Park city councilman, Oakland County supervisor, Oakland County commissioner, Pontiac city manager, 69th District state representative, and 8th District state senator. Mastin also served two terms as president of the Mental Health Association in Michigan and was a member of the National Mental Health Association’s executive committee and board of directors. He retired in 1994.

When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
