My Scariest Moment in the Woods
Being 15 Years old, alone in the woods and staring down 3 bears. Scary?
The scariest moment of my hunting career came when I was 15 years old on a turkey hunt in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Being 15 I had only been hunting 2 years at this point on my own and well lets just say I was still al little green. Okay a lot. This was also my first trip up to my dad’s “deer camp." The entire way up I drove with my learners permit. This included crossing the world’s longest suspension bridge. All five miles of the Mackinaw bridge were scary as hell.
Now you add that the entire way up my dad convinced me that in the U.P. there was an angry bear around every tree stump. On top of that, the hunting property of his camp is bordered on one side by a federal prison. Tall fences, barbed wire the whole bit. It was a 5 and half hour drive from home. It was 5 and half hours of him loading me up with so many b.s. stories of prison riots and bear attacks that by the time we arrived I didn’t sleep a wink.
