Potato Progress

The taters in the bags are fully engulfed in green foliage and there are even a few flowering buds on them I am sure by next weeks update they will be even more beautiful. Ive heard stories about the potato flower being one of Marie Antoinette’s favorites and that she would cut them to wear in her hair.

The Yukon golds that I planted in the beds are ready to be hilled.

I took the advice of one of my friends Oldpot on the Michigan Garden Club Forums and  hilled them with straw. Straw is a great growing medium for them because it holds moisture and remains loose. I then topped them off with some fresh top soil. This is so that the wind does not blow all my straw away.

When using straw in the garden make sure it is straw and not hay. Hay is the top of the plant and is full of seed heads and will be a nightmare for your garden in the future. Straw is the bottom part of the stalk and contains little to no seeds.

As you can see the yukons will be ready for hilling again in about 10 days I am guessing and they will be at the top of the burplap. From that point on I may pack some more top soil on them then just let them do their thing.

I need a FTB garden slogan, any ideas?
