Big News Around You: Brandon Hayes Found Guilty in Dominick Calhoun's Death, Michigan Couple Survive Cruise Ship Disaster

Here are the top five stories from around the Fenton area this week.

1. The story of Dominick Calhoun, 4, an Argentine Township boy who was beaten to death by his mother Corrine Baker's ex-boyfriend Brandon Hayes, continued on Thursday. A jury found Hayes guilty on 10 counts, including child abuse and torture, the Times Herald reported. Sentencing could take place in Genesee County on Feb. 27, and Hayes could face up to life in prison. Many Fenton Patch readers commented on the tragic case.

2. On Monday, had a story about the Lake Fenton Winter Classic hockey tournament being delayed to its backup dates of Feb. 17-19, due to the ice only being about an inch thick on Lake Fenton. The tournament will take place near the Fenton Moose Lodge.

3. reported Thursday on the battle Daniel Quinn, of Hartland, is fighting for custody of Maeleigh, his 5-year-old daughter. Bills in the Michigan Senate would change paternity laws and give standing in the courts to biological fathers, regardless of who the mother was married to at the time of birth.

4. The Times Herald in Port Huron reported Tuesday that a local doctor and his wife, Steve and Kathy Ledtke of Fort Gratiot, survived the sinking of the Costa Concordia cruise ship on Jan. 15, near Italy. Afterward, the Ledtkes were able to tell their family they were safe via a short Facebook message.

5. A chili cook-off at participating Fenton businesses raised donations for Adopt-A-Pet, reported Friday. The cook-off was part of the city of Fenton's Third Thursday programs, which allow participants to shop, dine and support local charities.
