Why Cuba?

Visiting Cuba has been a lifelong dream so when I learned of this educational opportunity I couldn't pass it up.

In October, I’ll be traveling to Cuba with a group of social workers from the National Association of Social Workers to study Cuba’s social welfare system. Despite the poverty in Cuba they have a generous social welfare system that is a cornerstone of its economy. Michigan and much of the United States have cut funding to their social welfare programs and explain doing so due to financial hardship. The United States could learn much from Cuba.

Who Am I?

Those that know me may describe me as someone that cares passionately about helping others. As a social worker I’ve dedicated my life to this and I am always seeking to learn more.

I have seen firsthand how cuts in funding to Michigan’s social welfare programs have impacted Michigan’s citizens. My goal is to return from Cuba with information that can be used to make positive changes.

What I Need

I’m asking for your help so that I can become a better advocate in our community and our world.

My time in Cuba is a very unique opportunity – not only are there are very few options for traveling there legally as a US citizen – but Cuba serves as an excellent social welfare model.

Please share my blog with anyone and everyone. The more people that know the more change we can make.

This opportunity is beyond my budget so I'm asking for help from you – the community, my friends and family- to help me with $4,000. The costs associated with this trip include tuition, flights and transportation, tour registration fees (including required health insurance, visa, taxes, and interpreter/guide), food and water, and accommodations. What You Can Expect To Read About

While in Cuba I will be visiting and meeting with professionals at a senior center, farmers market, children’s theater, University of Havana, community centers, the Center for Psychosocial Investigation, a family doctor clinic, school for special needs children, and Cuban Institute for Sex Education and Gender Studies.

Upon returning home, I will share the inspiring stories and lessons that Cuba’s citizens have to offer and use the knowledge I gain to advocate for change.

By supporting my campaign, not only will you get the opportunity to get some great perks, but I promise to come back from this trip inspired to work harder to make this a better world for all of us.

Please feel free to ask me questions!
