Today: 5K to Honor the Life of Dominick Calhoun

When 4-year-old Dominick Calhoun of Argentine Township was killed at the hands of his mother's ex-boyfriend, he was among more than 2,200 children in Genessee County who were abused and neglected.

That same year – 2010 – there were more than 32,504 to children across the state, according to the Michigan League for Human Services.

And that's just one reason and ChildHelp Michigan have teamed up for today's 5K run/walk event, . Patch is a sponsor for this inagural event aimed at raising awareness about child abuse and raising funds for children in need.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at Kensington Metropark in Milford. The fee is $20 and includes a T-shirt.

So, grab your running shoes and head on over to 2240 Buno Rd. If you don't plan on running, come cheer on those who are. There also will be plenty of child-friendly activities, including a bounce house and face-painting. There is a $5 parking fee per vehicle.

Opening ceremonies kick off at 9 a.m., with the 5K beginning at 9:15 a.m. and the one-mile walk at 9:45 a.m. The event will go until 1:30 p.m. (Make sure you stop by the Patch tent.)

Medals will be presented to runners in four age categories, along with the top three fundraising teams.

And whether you are running or just enjoying the festivities, please . Patch will donate $1, up to $100 for every picture uploaded.

Childhelp has a goal to raise $20,000 and last month it had reached the $4,000 mark, said Samantha Lee, one of the organizers of the event.

Brandon Hayes will spend the rest of his for Dominick's murder, and Dominick's mother, Corrine Baker will serve 13 to 30 years.
