Hartland Teen Center Opens, Fire Destroys Downtown Byron

There was a lot of news around Fenton this week.

Here is a list of the top five most interesting stories from the Fenton area this week.

1. The Hartland Teen Center Opens With a Successful First Week, according to Hartland Patch.

2. Investigators say the fire that destroyed several historic buildings in downtown Byron early Monday morning was arson, NBC 25 reports. State fire officials said the blaze was intentionally started in the apartment above Janelle’s restaurant.

3. The Genesee County Jail is overcrowded, and if the problem hasn’t resolved by next week, some inmates will receive time cut from their sentences, the Flint Journal says. The jail population on Thursday was 621, down from 700 at the height of the overcrowding emergency. The number needs to be reduced to 525.

4. Linden city manager Mark Tallman, hired five months ago, resigned in what Mayor David Lossing said was a mutual decision, the Tri-County Times reports. Police Chief Scott Sutter will be interim city manager, until Linden finds a new person to fill the position.

5. Waterford Township police found a 2.5-foot alligator living in the basement of a home where a man was growing marijuana, the Oakland Press said. The man also had four pit bulls, which were taken to a residence in White Lake Township (along with the gator) because Waterford has an ordinance prohibiting pit bull ownership.
