Fenton Residents Enjoying Unseasonal Warm Weather

Golf courses, parks packed with people basking in the sun.

Chris White will never underestimate Fenton area golfers’ desire to play early in the season ever again.

The owner opened the golf club Sunday when temperatures hit 60 degrees and expected to run the entire course by himself. When 100 golfers showed up, he knew he was in trouble and sent a panicked text to all his staff, begging them to come in to work. They came in and saved him, and on Wednesday when temperatures reached the 70s, he was more prepared.

White had a full staff ready for a course full of golfers, who like many Fenton residents were out enjoying the sunshine Wednesday.

“They are ecstatic,” White said of the golfers. “They can come out on March 14 and wear shorts. The greens are little rough, but they understand. I’ve had no complaints.”

Local residents Richard Farlin and Jack Sumner hit the links at Fenton Farms Wednesday and enjoyed every minute of it they said, despite higher scores than they’d care to admit.

“It feels great,” Sumner said. “It’s beautiful.”

White said the course was open a few days in January and February, but now he expects to stay open the rest of the season. He said the season usually starts on April 15 and sometimes a week earlier.

“This is usually vacation time for me,” White said.

While some residents headed to the golf course, Mary Smith took her grandchildren to in Fenton and planned to walk downtown.

“It’s perfect,” Smith said of the weather. “You couldn’t ask for anything better.”

Chris Summers, of Fenton, also visited Millpond Park with his dog, Rickey.

“It’s awesome,” he said. “I was going to go golfing, but didn’t have time. It’s just a great day.”

Fenton’s Mark Bailey and Linden’s Alex Michael rode their bikes throughout Fenton Wednesday.

“It’s pretty awesome,” Michael said. “There’s not much to do in Linden, so I came to ride around here.”

Residents may have to deal with some clouds before the sunshine comes back. According to the National Weather Service, there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11 a.m. and Thursday night. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a high of 72.

Friday will be partly sunny with a high near 68, before cloudy skies take over at night. Saturday is expected to be partly sunny skies with a high near 72.
