Michael Durgan running errands when he discovered it was his lucky day.

After Michael Durgan learned he won $250,000, he had to write a $6 check for cigarettes because he didn't have any cash on him.

It wasn't easy.

"I was shaking pretty fiercely," the Fenton resident said. "I told the cashier I don't know if she'd be able to read it."

He had stopped to get cigarettes when he decided to check the lottery ticket that he’d purchased two days before.

When he checked the ticket in the “Lucky Spot” scanner, it gave him the message to see the retailer. When the clerk behind the counter scanned it, the message advised him to contact the Michigan Lottery. That’s when the cashier offered to check his numbers and Durgan discovered it was his very lucky day.

“When she checked the numbers and found the ticket to be a winner, I started shaking and so did she,” he stated."I thought is this happening? She couldn't believe it and neither could I."

Durgan used the easy pick to get the numbers that netted him $250,000. He said his first thought was "I'm out of debt." Durgan said the money will help him pay off bills that were starting to add up. He said it will be a relief not to live paycheck to paycheck.

"I didn't hardly sleep," Durgan said. "I couldn't believe it was real, but now the money is in the bank, so I guess it's real."

Durgan, whose ticket was sold by Fenton Party Store located at 502 W. Silver Lake Road in Fenton, held one of that matched the five white balls in the Mega Millions drawing of March 20. He said he plays the lottery when the jackpot grows to a big number.

Two other players have also claimed their prizes. Abe Jones of Taylor purchased his winning $250,000 ticket at Sam’s Yum Yum Donuts Inc. located at 8284 Telegraph Road in Taylor. Another prize winning ticket was claimed by William Bobbish of Canton who purchased his ticket at Smoker’s Express located at 45156 Ford Road in Canton.
