Great Escape, Family Edition: May Day & Faerie Festival

Heavenly Scent Herb Farms' annual festival to welcome spring.

While most Great Escapes are geared toward Moms, this one is geared for the entire family. With warmer weather approaching, we're pretty sure everyone in your household is going to want to get outside.

In Fenton, spring doesn't really begin until you've been to the annual Faerie Festival held at . Located off of White Lake Road in Fenton, the Faerie Festival runs on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 1, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is only $1.00.

Kathy Mathews, owner of Heavenly Scent Herb Farm, has been offering this festival since 1989, only a year after they opened their doors.

Mathews, a former teacher, has always been hooked on faeries. One of the reasons she began this festival was because it "brings kids closer to nature."

"It gets you to look at insects and plants up close," she said. "It's also a great way to get them away from their computer games."

All ages are welcome. Don't forget to dress your little faeries and elves up for the occasion. There will be a parade and dancing around the May Pole.

Don't shy away if your family is full of boys, either.

"Faeries can be boys or girls," said Mathews.

The Chestnut Faerie is one example. He has a nut for his head.

"They always have fun making stuff," says Mathews, when talking about the variety of workshops offered to the wee ones.

You can make a faerie doll, a faerie headband, a faerie door/box to keep your treasures or a faerie garden.

There are lot's of other things to see and do, too.

Heavenly Scent has everything you need to create your own Faerie Garden at home. Mini tools, benches, items to make arbors. Even a "greenhouse full of miniature plants," said Mathews.

There will be special storytelling times as well. Be sure not to miss the Morris Dancers from Ann Arbor on Saturday. Mathews says they will be there to "welcome in Spring," at 12:30, 1:45 and 3:00p.m.
