Katie Loses Fight With Cancer

Fenton teenager Katie Wyatt died Tuesday after a long battle with kidney cancer.

Katie Wyatt fought a long, painful battle.

On Tuesday, that fight came to an end as the 14-year-old Fenton resident died of kidney cancer.

While in the last few months a new medication from University of Michigan Health System doctors helped reduce her pain, allowing her to travel and walk around, in the recent days her body could no longer fight.

In March, she was able to attend a Detroit Red Wings game and meet the players.

“They were all nice,” Katie said in April of the Red Wings players. “They all stopped and said hi."

Katie was also able to take road trips to Florida in recent months.

In April her father, Doug Wyatt, and his girlfriend, Lisa Moryc, said it's been a blessing that Katie has been able to enjoy life a little bit.

"Every single day we are with her, it's amazing," Moryc said in April. "Even doctors think its amazing."

Many friends posted comments on her Facebook page after hearing the news of her death.

Asia Dawn Willis posted, "Just found out some really bad news. ): R.I.P Katie Wyatt, Im gunna miss you so much. i love you forever & always. </3 Best friends forever i promise."

Alisha Muma posted, "Katey Wyatt I love u soo much I'm so glad ur in a better place god has so many good things planed in heaven for u !!!!

In January, hosted a fundraiser, called , to help the Wyatt family with medical costs. More than 800 people attended the event, which raised thousands of dollars. The school has done various things for Katie, including selling bracelets with her name on them, taking up collections at lunch and having choir and band concerts in her honor.

Doctors diagnosed Katie with renal cell carcinoma when she was 11. She stopped attending school in November.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, at Cornerstone Church, 4995 North Hickory Ridge Road in Highland. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Linden.

Visitation will be held at , Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, on Thursday and Friday from 12 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. and at church Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of service.
