Divorce – Live Happy or Die

Why Colombian women are such good marriage partners intrigued my mind.

According to a 2006 research report Colombia has one of the lowest divorce rates in all of the Latin American countries. By contrast the USA has one of the highest in the world with 54% of all marriages ending in divorce. But my concern is obviously about an American man and a Colombian woman. An unofficial survey showed that such a marriage had a 90% chance for a lifetime of success, which makes it one of the best in the world.

Why Colombian women are such good marriage partners intrigued my mind. Some people said it is because they are Catholic. But that could not be the answer as almost all of Latin America is the same religion. My questioning of more Colombians revealed there are many factors at play in the answer. One comment emerged more often than others, Colombian women are beautiful both outside and inside.

Every American, Canadian, Englishman and German man I know living in Colombia has said the same thing; Colombian women always try to look feminine, even in business. Americans already know the outside beauty of two Colombians, the singer Shakira and the actress Sophia Vergara. Mattel released a line of Barbie dolls inspired by the look of the Colombian singer. Vergara, who is best known to Americans by her role on the TV show Modern Family, was recently voted the most desirable woman in the world by a survey of one million men. That feat is not bad for a woman with 39 years. Yes, Colombian women hold their age very well. But if you really want to see how well they do it just take a look at Telenovela (soap opera) star Amparo Grisales, who recently posed nude for SOHO magazine. With well over 50 years living on earth she has a look that can heat up the coldest room. And yes that view comes devoid of surgical enhancements.

Beauty outside can be subjective. It is beautiful inside that really makes it. One paper stated it is because that the world for Colombian women is centered around family. My personal belief, from not only my own marriage but from that of other gringos married to a Colombian, is that Colombian women are more willing to act as a partner in marriage rather than as two people married yet each one individual. They do not seem to be in competition with anyone. If a man is willing to work within the marriage as a partner as well, then it is long lasting relationship. And I have noticed that marriages in the USA that have that same synergy are also ones that have an excellent chance of life success.

There is another side to these marriages that can help keep the divorce statistics low. Many have heard the term of fiery Latina temper. Over the years two cases of an American/Colombian marriage living in the US have made the news. Basically the moral is never ever cheat on a Colombian woman. One wife ran over her husband with the new Cadillac he bought her (probably feeling guilty for straying in the marriage). Then she backed up and ran over him again, repeating the procedure three more times. In another instance of an American married to a Colombian, the husband ran into three bullets after being caught with another woman. And there is no doubt in my mind that my days on Earth will be severely limited should I stray. But hey, marriage is about fidelity anyway and having a beautiful sexy partner who works with you helps. Not to mention that it sure beats the alternative.

Dear Stephanie, Dear Sara and Dear Mr. Kershaw: First of all I am Colombian, I'm a woman, no, i'm not married but one of my sisters married an american man, an ex cop, very abussive. It was not at all easy as Sara says to get a divorce form an abussive partner, there is not enough help from the government either, You may be a counselor, but that is not enough, you don't make rules, you can only advice. Obviously U.S is a much bigger country than ours, you guys have more ways to get help, but it doesn't mean all the population gets bennefits from it. Being a bigger country gives even more problems that the ones we've got, or the same maximized, it's much more harder to keep every citizen well and safe. And no, Bogota is certainly not the most dangerous city in the world, it's Mexico D.F, but i guess you must believe what says on any survey found on the internet right? You guys can't judge Mr. Kershaw or us women in colombia saying we do what men tell us, or that this is a patriarcal country, you've got absolutely no idea , why? Because you are not Colombian and you are judging someone who actually lives here.

And like he said, we are very know for our fiery temper, i don't like Mr. Kershaw posting the most extreme expamples because for that matter americans would win, you host a lot of weird crazy husbands and wifes with a lot of problems from lack of education or whathever other problems there might be, even genetic ones, i lived there for three years and i saw the weirdest people i've ever seen in my life. I don't mean to offend, if I did, I'm truly sorry but seriously, let's keep focused instead of fighting like kids over a morepositive article rather than a negative or agressive one. So Sara, Stephanie and Michael just focus ont the fact that Mr Kershaw is just trying to say that colombian women are good partners because they do teamwork in marriages and not because we have no choice or not any help from the law or government, it does not apply to every single marriage nor here or in the world , but just keep in mind, we are not better than you and viceversa. And yes, Mr. Kershaw, whenever you use an example of a beautiful women don't just use them because of their looks, women will judge you easily, find smarter people or more useful people for the society, not a pop singer and soap opera actresses, I can see why Sara and Stephanie got heated up. We like to admire intelligent women above all. Not that they're not smart, but they don't represent a whole moral model either. P.S: it's Colombia not Columbia. Columbia is in the U.S.

You must be married to Joe! And his columns are sexist, and I won't be reading them.

Eva, fair enough. Different research has shown different rankings. I, in no way, meant to say anything bad about the women in Colombia. I don't believe that I overstepped when I said that it was ruled by patriarchy, I would love if you could prove me wrong, but most of the world is dominated by patriarchy, including the US, some places are just more than others. I am sure that there are women there with "fiery tempers", but you find that in any ethnicity, I am a mix of different ones and can be quite fiery myself, especially when reading some blog written by some man who is so deep in denial. As for the divorce, is this not true: http://www.banderasnews.com/0509/nw-quickdivorce.htm As a counselor, I cannot make rules, but I do more than just give advice, at least that is what my clients tell me ;)
