Signing With Your Baby

Signing with children with language delays.

Noah had his hearing tested again last Friday (this gets done every three months for the first year when your child had ds - at this hospital at least).

He tested "perfect".  When she was done with all her testing, the audiologist asked me if he was enrolled in Early On. The second it came out of her mouth, she remembered that I used to be an Early On teacher and so he was not enrolled "formally" ... but rather is constantly being taught.

She then asked me if I was going to teach him sign language as he just turned 9 months and is so expressive.  I told yes, most definitely that we've taught all our kids at least some sign.  I explained that he was just starting to "get" patty cake and once he understood/was able to do that ... we could/would start with the sign "more".

She was very impressed that I knew what I was talking about (lol).  She even wrote it in her note to the doctor who then asked me at the appointment immediately following the audiogram.  It's funny because when I was teaching in the public school setting, sign was not always looked upon favorably .... it looks like the pendulum is swinging back now :).

There are a lot of resources out there now for teaching your child to sign, but these two are our favorite-

Signing Time has been around for a while now, so you can find them at garage sales, thrift stores Craigslist, and Ebay reasonably priced!  Even if you can't, honestly ... they are worth the investment for kids with language delays!  :)
