Crime Report: Man Flees Scene of Rollover Accident

The following arrest information was supplied by the Fenton Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

arrested a 21-year-old Ypsilanti man on July 10 on charges of drunken driving.

Police Lt. Jason Slater said officers responded to a rollover accident around 1:30 a.m. on South Holly Road near the city limits.

Slater said the driver was westbound on South Holly Road when he failed to take a curve, hit the guardrail, re-entered the roadway and flipped his 2003 Saturn Vue.

Slater said the passenger, a 25-year-old Fenton woman, ran from the scene but later told police she had warned the man he was driving too fast.

Slater said the man smelled of intoxicants, and a preliminary breath test revealed a blood-alcohol content of 0.151, which is over the state's legal limit of 0.08. The man was arrested and transferred to the Fenton Police Department.

Police responded to another rollover accident just more than an hour later at 2:45 a.m. at North Road and Adelaide Street, Slater said.

Police found a 2002 Chevy Avalanche rolled over, but no driver. They found him a short time later hiding in the wooded area near the Shiawassee River, the police report said.

Slater said the man told police he was unfamiliar with the roadway, ran into the curb and lost control of the vehicle.

The man was transported to the hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and where it was also learned that his blood-alcohol content was above the 0.08 legal limit, Slater said. He said police will pursue obtaining a copy of the blood test from the hospital and an arrest warrant from the Prosecutor’s Office.

Slater said small amount of marijuana was also found in the vehicle.

Telephone scam

A 71-year-old Fenton resident lost $2,900 in a telephone scam, Slater said.

The Fenton man reported receiving a phone call from a man who said he was his grandson, that he was in trouble in Canada and that the Fenton resident needed to talk to a police officer. Another man who identified himself as a police officer then got on the phone and said $2,900 needed to be wired to Panama City, Panama, Slater said.

The Fenton resident found out later, after he had wired the money, that his grandson had been at work at the time of the call.

While the man was filing the report at the Fenton Police Department, he received another call with the same request. He gave the phone to a Fenton Police officer, who asked what department they were calling from, and the man on the line hung up.

Fraudulent account

At 2 p.m. July 6, a 63-year-old Fenton woman reported that someone had used her personal information to open a business credit card account through Dell Financial Services.

Slater said police are still investigating the details.

A fraud alert was placed on her account, and she won’t be responsible for any of the fraudulent charges.
