Officials Urge Caution on Lake Ice After Recent Death in Groveland

Ice remains dangerous despite recent freezing temperatures, according to Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office has issued warnings regarding the danger of thin ice, despite freezing tempetatures which have dipped into the teens recently.

"The sheriff's office again wants to remind people that no ice in Oakland County can be considered safe, especially this early in the winter season," Undersheriff Mick McCabe wrote in a press release.

The warning follows an incident in Oakland County Tuesday in which an ice fisherman needed to be rescued by the sheriff's department, owing to thin ice. Divers found the body Tuesday of a 63-year-old Rose Township man who went fishing Monday in Groveland Township, McCabe wrote.

County medical examiners identified the man as  Donald Earl Thorpe, originally of Holly. Thorpe was found in 12 feet of water on Hartwick Lake, according to McCabe.

Temperatures this week should remain just below freezing, according to the National Weather Service. A high temperature of 25 degrees is in the forecast Wednesday, with a low temperature of 14.
