Suspect in Fenton Resident and West Bloomfield Officer's Shooting Found Dead

UPDATE - 6:55 p.m. Police have confirmed that Rick Coley, a man believed responsible for  has been found dead inside of a West Bloomfield home.

The news ends a 15-hour faceoff in which Coley barricaded himself in his home on the 4500 block of Forest Edge Lane, trading gunfire with police.  

According to police, it is unknown whether or not Coley killed himself. He was observed by robotic camera equipment supplied by the Michigan State Police motionless in a bed, according to a press release issued by Lt. Tim Diamond.

Coley is a suspect in the killing of O'Rourke, a 12-year veteran of the West Bloomfield force, who  as he and others were responding to shots fired at the house.

UPDATE - 4:10 p.m. Patch has confirmed that the shooter believed responsible for and hitting several others was involved in a divorce and had financial and business trouble. 

Diamond confirmed this afternoon that Coley, 50, is the suspect believed to be barricaded in a house in a West Bloomfield subdivision near Halsted and Pontiac Trail. Diamond said Coley has not communicated with police for some time and said Coley may be wounded. 

According to court documents obtained by Patch, Coley's ex-wife was granted a divorce, and possession of their home, on Sept. 4. 

Diamond said Coley's mother and brother came up from where they live in North Carolina to help him pack and move, but Coley he had a last minute change of heart and said he wasn't going anywhere. 

In addition to the divorce, federal court documents show Coley is the defendant in a civil case filed in August by the U.S. Dept. of Labor, over benefit payments that the government alleges were collected from employees of a firm in which Coley and his firm had a majority interest. Foley and his firm were also named in a March civil suit over a bankruptcy filing for that same business. 

According to West Bloomfield Township Clerk Cathy Shaughnessy, the officers heard one shot fired and thought it was a possible suicide as they entered the home.

"... they thought a man had killed himself. They went upstairs and got no response and the suspect fired many shots, possibly from a semi-automatic weapons," she said.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Dept. mobile command unit has been on the scene since around 10 a.m.; a large armored sheriff's department vehicle arrived around noon. And at 3:45 p.m., a semi-truck carrying some sort of construction equipment was being pulled onto the street past the security line.

The officer's body has been removed from the scene. . He is a 1991 graduate of Hartland High School and later moved to Tyrone Township.

The Detroit Free Press reports that social media pages apparently belonging to Foley show he was a military veteran who held an MBA and worked at Ford Motor Company until sometime in 2008.  

West Bloomfied Police Lt. Tim Diamond said this may be the first police fatality in the department's history.

"He was a model police officer, dedicated family man," Diamond said of O'Rourke, who previously had been honored with a lifesaving award and three unit commendations.

Late last night family members were taken from the residence as well as other neighbors. About 30 of them without friends and relatives in the area spent the night at the , she said.

The area of Halsted and Pontiac Trail remains an active crime scene, with a mobile command unit, including a Michigan State Police bomb squad and an Oakland County Sheriff's Office helicopter.

Sheriff deputies are escorting people in and out of the area, but others are being kept a distance away.

Colleen Austin, with Salvation Army, said she is one the scene to provide provisions to law enforcement on the scene.

She is among those who heard a round of gun shots about 9 a.m. today.

"Well, me, I was surprised, but the (police) are well prepared and they are doing all they need to do," she said.

She said there's a lot of "nervous folks" at the scene. "Neighbors have been evacuated and police are doing a good job," she said.
