Medical Examiners, Family Member Testify in Dominick Calhoun Case

Officials say 4-year-old boy was covered in bruises.

There were not many dry eyes in a Genesee County courtroom Monday as witnesses testified that a 4-year-old Argentine Township boy, Dominick Calhoun, was covered in bruises before his death.

Dominick's mother's ex-boyfriend stands accused of beating him to death in 2010. On day two of the medical examiners and family members testified.

One doctor had to briefly halt his own testimony because he was so emotional, according to the Livingston Daily Press & Argus and said after he saw the extent of the boy's injuries, he knew Dominick had "no hope."

Many pictures of Dominic's injuries were shown, according to ABC 12 WJRT-TV, and officials said there was no part of his body that wasn't bruised and that bruises and scald marks on Dominick's groin area looked almost like he was wearing swimming trunks.

"You know, every inch of his body was covered. I assumed it was somewhat of an exaggeration and it's quite clear now that it was not an exaggeration," Dominick's Aunt, Melanie Calhoun, told the TV station.

WHMI (93.5 FM) reported Dominick's grandfather, Rick Calhoun, took the stand and Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said he held up extremely well under very difficult circumstances.

Calhoun told the jury he walked into the family's Argentine apartment in April of 2010 and found Dominick unresponsive except for "moaning a little bit," according to minbcnews.com. The article stated Calhoun visibly broke down when asked to identify a photo of his grandson in the condition he found him in. The boy later died in the hospital.

Brandon Hayes, a former Tyrone Township resident, could face life in prison if convicted of murder and child abuse. Dominick's Mother and former Tyrone Township woman Corrine Baker pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in August and agreed to testify against co-defendant Hayes.

Many readers have commented on Fenton Patch about the case.

Denise Stanley Ouillette said, "Sending many prayers, praying for justice, so sad."

The case is set to continue Tuesday.
