City Could Oversee North LeRoy Street/Fenton Road Project in 2012

Genesee County Road Commission offers to let Fenton take the reins; city administrators evaluating it.

North LeRoy Street turns into Fenton Road, and the construction on both might be supervised by one entity. The city of Fenton and the Genesee County Road Commission are discussing whether Fenton will oversee their combined North LeRoy Street/Fenton Road project in 2012.

The projects are both planned in the same year, City Manager Lynn Markland said. Construction will begin in the city and continue into Fenton Township.

He and Department of Public Works Director Daniel Czarnecki are assessing the road commission's offer of letting Fenton oversee both of the projects, Markland said. The issue will appear before city council for discussion at council's August work session.

In other news, the Adelaide Street project appears as if it will be completed well within schedule, he said. It originally was scheduled for completion around Sept. 1, before St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church's annual Applefest.

Last week, the base coat was completed for Adelaide Street. Paving will take place this week to early next week, with restoration work following.

In addition, Fire Chief Robert Cairnduff has issue a ban on all burning in the city, including recreational burns, until further notice. The extreme heat and dry conditions make it unsafe, Markland said. Last week, on Thursday, the Farmers' Market and Concert in the Park were cancelled due to high temperatures making it too dangerous for the public to attend an outdoor event.

Council appointed April Parillo and Evelyn Koller to first terms on the Museum Board, and designated Councilman Tim Faricy as its representative to the Zoning Board of Appeals. Councilwoman Dianne North is the alternate.

A number of other boards and commissions in the city need volunteers, Councilwoman Cheryl King said. Mayor Sue Osborn said the brownfield committee and Fenton Beautification Commission need members. Cherie Smith, of the Beautification Commission, said the nine-member commission needs five more members.

Fenton's police and fire departments are receiving the new Tahoes they ordered this week. The police department has received its new vehicle, Markland said.

To date, through the second quarter, the city has received a credit of $1,600 for recycling earnings, said Gary Hicks, of Republic Waste, the city's garbage hauler.

Osborn said the previous company gave Fenton some recycling credits in the beginning but "that fell by the wayside."
