Dominick's Law Heads to Gov. Snyder

The legislation strengthens penalties for first- and second-degree child abuse, creating additional penalties for additional offenses of child abuse.

The Michigan House today gave final approval to legislation known as "Dominick's Law" that will strengthen penalties for child abuse in Michigan and create penalties for abuse in front of other people.

The legislation, sponsored by state Reps. Matt Lori and Joseph Graves, are in memory of , a 4-year old from Argentine Township who was in 2010, in the presence of his older brother.

"Passing this legislation is a big victory for ensuring the safety of Michigan's children as it demonstrates that child abuse will not be tolerated in our state," said Graves, R-Argentine Township. "I hope that sending these bills to Gov. Snyder will also allow some closure for the Calhoun family as we honor the memory of little Dominick."

House Bills 5562 and 5563 establish penalties for committing child abuse in the presence of another child, which is not currently considered a component of the crime.

"Updating these laws gives the courts the tools to properly punish criminals who commit child abuse and sends the message that what happened to Dominick Calhoun will not be tolerated in Michigan," said Lori, R-Constantine. "We are determined to better protect our children from child abuse and I believe this has been accomplished under this legislation."

The legislation also strengthens penalties for first- and second-degree child abuse, creating additional penalties for additional offenses of child abuse.

HB 5562 and 5563 now await the Governor Rick Snyder's signature.

Congratulations !! I wish our Governor from California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, would of cared enough to meet with us when he singed Adam's Law (AB 1280) in 2010. I guess because my precious grandson Adam Carbajal survived this horrific crime, makes it better, so sad. https://www.facebook.com/AdamsLaw

Baker may be a great trade school for some but just remember that it is not transferable to anyRead More other school or university.

You need to know that if you live around children that you can control your animal. Pitbulls are theRead More most powerful dog that there is. They can jump a 4 foot tall fence. You have to consider would you let your pitbull play with a two year old? There are kids in neighborhoods that play and these dogs can overpower and chew up several adults if it desired to. There are several pitbulls in Fenton and they always snarl and bark aggressively at my 17 month old. Pitbulls seem to dislike wagons and anything on wheels on sidewalks. This is why I despise them. I don't appreciate dogs acting aggressively towards infants and I don't know why anyone would want a dog with the most powerful jaw and meanest temperament of all dogs. These dogs where breed to be vicious, strong and relentless; please don't forget that. Every pitbull owner whose dog chewed up an old lady, a baby, or others always says the same thing " he was the nicest dog, he would lick you to death."

Thank you Karen, pitbull owners need to take very special care in "socializing" theirRead More animals and take very extreme precautions for their dogs. The average adult can fend off most breeds of dogs accept for pitbulls and children do not stand a chance. Please be aware of the uncontrollable dangers of these dogs.
