Fenton Congressman Leads New U.S. Senate Poll

Rep. Mike Rogers is a front-runner for the GOP nomination to the senate seat that is being vacated by Carl Levin.

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, the Republican who represents Fenton, is a front-runner for the GOP nomination to the state's next U.S. Senate race, according to a poll released Tuesday.

On Saturday, Rogers said he was considering a run for the Senate seat that Democrat Carl Levin recently announced that he would vacate in 2014.

"I am giving the Senate race serious consideration," Rogers told the Detroit Free Press.

Rogers has served since 2001 as the representative for Michigan's 8th District, which includes Fenton following last year's Congressional redistricting. He also serves as the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and is a former FBI agent.

In the automated survey of 1,170 likely Republican voters conducted Monday, 31.11 percent of respondents said they would support Rogers for the GOP nomination to the senate seat, according to a news release from Murray Communications-Portable Insights-Combat Data, which conducted the poll.

Scott Romney, the brother of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, received 29.74 percent of the votes; former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land received 20.85 percent of the votes. The margin of error in the poll was 2.86 percent.

“The poll is good news for U.S Rep. Mike Rogers,” said Christopher Mark of Portable Insights. “His support among likely Republican primary voters extends beyond his congressional district and puts him at a solid starting point in this race.”

In another poll released this week, Romney leads Rogers by a small margin.

According to the Free Press, U.S. Rep. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township, has also indicted he may seek the Senate seat.

No way will I vote for Mike Rogers. He's of the Republican ilk that sees terrorists under every bed, thinks civil liberties are expendable, and never voted against bigger spending or bigger government. He is part of the problem, not the solution. The best thing about a Rogers run would be his expedient return to the private sector, where he will no doubt continue to extort tax money through lobbying and contracts. Rep Justin Amash wants to end the wars, which would enable us to get spending under control and protect our civil liberties. He's my first choice.

I agree with you about Rogers. Did you know that his campaign manager had been a lobbyist for the Grocery Store industry and Rogers was trying to have ingrediant labeling taken off food...So you wouldn't know if it was made around nuts or whatever? Truthfully, the last thing we or any of us need is another republican in DC, they have brought such havoc with their terrible economic policies ( like DEREGULATION; meaning very few laws to regulate business). The only things that Repubs care about is giving more breaks to those who need it, the least Tell me, have you ever read about the Repubs proposing a program to help the middle class, except tax breaks, and even then they propose giving bigger breaks to the wealthy....it's what they do....no thanks.
