Fenton Council Approves Contract with Police Command Officers

Three-year contract replaces one that expired June 30, 2011, city attorney said.

The city of Fenton has approved a 3-year contract with the union for its police department command unit.

Parties have reached an agreement on wages and a contract. In the new contract, the command officers will receive pay increases of 2 percent this year, 1.5 percent in 2013 and 1 percent in 2014, said City Manager Lynn Markland. In addition, they will receive a $200 stipend.

The command officers previously agreed to a pay freeze for 2008, 2009 and 2010 and received a $1,000 stipend in 2011.

Fenton members of the Command Officers Association of Michigan (COAM) approved the new contract, and Markland told city council he recommended that council approve it as well.

Council unanimously voted in favor of the contract.

Attorney Stephen Schultz said the previous contract expired on June 30, 2011.

The additional cost of the new contract, for the first year, is approximately $4,000, Markland said. Employees who are part of the union include two sargeants, one lieutenant and one dispatch supervisor.
