Fines Levied After Fatal Fenton Township Manhole Accident

The city of Linden received a $1,000 fine.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has issued fines after the investigation of the August manhole incident where one man died near Prices Airport in Fenton Township.

The Flint Journal reported Tuesday that the contractors of the construction job were fined a combined $10,500 for failing to protect employees, while the city of Linden was fined $1,000 for failing to have a policy and training in place for a respirator that was used during the rescue.

Fenton Township Battalion Chief Ryan Volz told Fenton Patch two men were overcome by the fumes and fell while doing work on the sewer.

Fenton Patch reported Linden Police officer Gary Conklin descended into the hole before Fenton Township firefighters arrived and turned the men over so their faces were not in the water. Conklin had to be put on oxygen after exiting the manhole.
