Michael Burns is Staying

DeWitt chooses candidate with more experience for its next city administrator.

Assistant City Manager Michael Burns won’t be leaving his post after all.

The DeWitt City Council has chosen another candidate, one with 11 years of city management experience, to serve as its next city administrator.

Burns interviewed with the DeWitt City Council on Monday, Jan. 10. He learned Friday, Jan. 14 that he was not selected.

“Being that I have worked in a city manager’s office for five years, but have only been an assistant city manager for two years, I respect their need to take the candidate with more experience,” said Burns. “I am proud of the fact that out of 105 applicants and going through three interviews for this position, that the City of DeWitt selected me as one of the final three for the position.

“It was a good experience for me to go through and I feel good about how this played out,” Burns added. “While DeWitt would have been a great opportunity for me to become their city administrator, I have a great opportunity here in Fenton to continue working on many positive projects for this city.”

Burns said ever since the announcement of his interview in DeWitt was made public, he has received many kind words from the and residents about how much they enjoy having him serve the city and don’t want to see him leave.

“I have to admit hearing that encouragement makes me realize that I have a lot of work here in Fenton to continue doing,” he said. “I enjoy serving the and will always try to do what I believe is in the best interest for the City of Fenton.”

 Burns, 32, also serves as the director for the . He started his career in Fenton on Feb. 9, 2009. He is a former Macomb County Sheriff’s Department deputy and holds bachelor and master’s degrees from Eastern Michigan University.
