An update from State Rep. Joe Graves

An update from State Representative Joe Graves on what's going on in Lansing.

March is Reading Month:

Many of our schools are celebrating 'March is Reading Month' by focusing on reading and encouraging our students to read on a regular basis. I have and will continue to be going into classrooms across the district this month to read with students and I hope you will take a moment to encourage the young people in your life to read as well.

This past Friday I was reading to a classroom in Flushing and after telling them that I was a lawmaker, I jokingly said we could pass a law that requires them attend school 7 days a week. That idea received NO support from the third graders and some boo's. Looks like that idea won't win me any popularity contests among third graders. I have appreciated the openness of the schools that have invited me and look forward to continuing to read to classrooms throughout the month of March.

Appealing your property tax assessments:

Recently, I held two very successful town halls on how to appeal your property tax assessments. The event in Fenton drew nearly 100 people and I was encouraged by the response that it received. If you were not able to attend but would like the information presented, please call my office at (517) 373-1780 or e-mail josephgraves@house.mi.gov and I'll be happy to send you the information.  Helping our vets
The Michigan House approved legislation that will save Michigan veterans much headache when trying to show proof of military service.  House Bills 4037 and 4287 makes the lives of veterans easier by creating a special designation for Michigan veterans on Michigan driver's licenses and state ID cards.

Placing a veteran's designation on our driver's licenses will save our veterans the hassle of having to repeatedly prove their service when applying to receive benefits and discounts.  To ensure veterans are receiving their benefits, the Secretary of State's office also will provide the application information to Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

The bills have now been sent to the Senate for consideration.
