Fenton Defense Blanks Lake Fenton

Tigers get first win of the season in 1-0 victory.

Thursday's girls soccer match between and was all
about possession.

The Tigers didn't allow Lake Fenton in the offensive zone very often - the Blue Devils had just six shots on goal - en route to a 1-0 victory at
home.

“The game plan was to win all the 50-50 balls,” Fenton coach Matt
Sullivan said. “We wanted to be more aggressive and apply a lot of
pressure. I was happy with the performance. All the girls played hard
and that's out goal.”

The Fenton defense was the shining star.

The Tigers stymied the Blue Devils offense and didn't allow a scoring
opportunity in the first half.

Fenton, however, had several scoring opportunities.

Senior defender Samantha Granger scored the game's only goal with 21:15 left in the first half. Granger received a pass from Elizabeth Davis and was able to beat the overly aggressive Lake Fenton keeper Linda Marchiewski to the left side of the net.

To go along with her assist, Davis also led the team in shots with six.

“They did a great job tonight…This is the first time that that defense has played together all season,“ Sullivan said. “They still have some learning to do, but they're aggressive and athletic.”

Marchiewski’s aggressive style helped her stop double digit scoring chances to keep Lake Fenton in the game.

The Blue Devils first shot on goal came six minutes into the second half. Just a minute later there best scoring chance of the night went wide off the foot of Katie Austin.

Lake Fenton coach Lenny Glasstetter said that halftime adjustments were able to help them finally get the ball rolling.

“We just went in and changed up our formations at the half,” Glasstetter said. “We played good against a good opponent. She (Marchiewski) played great, anytime she’s in goal we have a chance to get a shutout.”

The loss is Lake Fenton’s first of the season and they fall to 2-1. Fenton is now 1-1.

The Tigers host a tournament Saturday.
