Fenton High School's Top 10 of 2011

Four valedictorians, one salutatorian and 10 students with grade-point averages above 3.95

We introduced you to all of Fenton's Top 10 students during the past two weeks, but if you missed any, here is the list again. To read some more personal comments from the students, click their names.

, daughter of Mark and Melissa Chalut, is one of the four valedictorians for the Class of 2011 with a 4.0 grade-point average. Samantha has attended Fenton Area Public Schools since the age of 5. In addition to finding great academic success, she is greatly devoted to the arts. Samantha is Co-Photo Editor of the Fentonian yearbook and the InPrint newspaper. Her photographic abilities have helped to drive her educational aspirations. She has developed these skills through her three years of work as a staff photographer for the yearbook and through her work in Visual Communications classes at the Genesee Area Skill Center her junior and senior years. Samantha is a member of the National Scholastic Press Association Journalism Honor Roll and was chosen as a member of the All-State All-MIPA Journalism Staff in the area of photojournalism. She was honored with the Sarah E. Warner Award for Leadership in the Arts at the 2011 Ruby Zima Film & Arts Festival. She will continue her education at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s College of Imaging & Sciences. There she plans to earn her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Media for a future career in art direction. In addition to all of her academic success, Samantha recently earned her Silver Award from the Girl Scouts of America and was named to the City of Fenton's 175th Anniversary Queen's Court. Samantha greatly appreciates the support of her parents, Mark and Melissa Chalut, who have helped her to achieve anything on which she sets her sights.

, daughter of Bill and Julie Edgar, shares the valedictorian honors with a 4.0 grade-point average. Academic excellence has been a major goal for valedictorian Lizzie throughout her four years in high school. She was one of the five students chosen by the Fenton school district to attend the International Academy West, an honors and International Baccalaureate high school in White Lake, for her freshman and sophomore years of high school. When the IB program was instated at Fenton High School, she returned to her home school and became part of Cohort 1 of the IB Diploma Program. In that program, she took challenging classes in English, history, biology, economics, Spanish, and math in preparation for the IB exams in May. Her dedication to academics paid off when she won a gold medal in the Flint Metro League Math and Science Competition and helped Fenton place third out of nine schools in the competition. Outside of academics, Lizzie has been very involved in horseback riding. She has been riding at Tom Sworm Stables for 10 years and has shown American Saddlebred horses on a national level for nine years. Lizzie has also completed various service projects, including creating a charity event to benefit the American Heart Association at the annual American Saddlebred Horse Association of Michigan Horse Show in October 2010. Next year, Lizzie will be attending the College of Arts and Sciences at Oberlin College in Ohio to study English, Gender Studies and Spanish in the hopes of becoming a college English professor. Lizzie would like to thank her parents, Bill and Julie Edgar, for all of their patience, encouragement, and love through all of the ups and downs of high school; she could not have succeeded without them.

Sean Henry, son of Wendy and Doug Henry and one of the four valedictorians with a 4.0 grade-point average, has achieved academic excellence while simultaneously undertaking the most rigorous coursework that Fenton High School has to offer. Sean is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate, which encompasses a core program of study involving seven one-year and two-year advanced courses, including economics, history, literature and Theory of Knowledge. He enrolled in AP Calculus BC and has also taken the AP US History and AP Government classes, earning a score of five on each of the exams. Outside of his academic coursework, Sean also serves the community in his role as Vice President of the National Honor Society and as chair of the Relay for Life committee for the American Cancer Society. He has completed over 200 hours of self-driven community service through the IB Creativity, Action, and Service program. He has played actively on the varsity soccer team, served as both member and trombone section leader in the Fenton Marching Tigers and participated in multiple school band ensembles. Next year, Sean will be attending the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. to earn a degree in the area of the humanities. Sean would like to thank his parents, Wendy and Doug Henry, sister, Megan Henry, and all of his family for all of their support, laughter and love.

daughter of Karen and Douglas Rooker, rounds out the valedictorians with a 4.0 grade-point average. Throughout her high school career, Ally has achieved at the highest level, earning her spot as one of the four valedictorians for the Class of 2011. She has taken advanced classes such as AP U.S. History, AP Government, AP Calculus, Advanced Publications and Advanced Desktop Publishing. She has also taken International Baccalaureate classes, including IB History HL and IB English HL in her junior and senior years. As an athlete, Ally was a three-year varsity volleyball player. She earned Honorable Mention in 2009 and First Team All Metro-League in 2010, received the Coach’s Award in 2009, the Athlete of the Week Award in 2009 and 2010 and is an FHS record holder for volleyball attack percentage. Ally has dedicated much of her time to the nationally accredited Fentonian yearbook staff during her sophomore and junior years as a staff photographer, and during her senior year as Assistant Editor In-Chief. Ally is a recipient of the National Scholastic Press Association Honor Roll award. As a two-year member of the National Honor Society, Ally has been involved with community service and served as the co-chair of the tutoring committee. She was also elected Junior Class Secretary. Ally has been a member of the Fenton Marching Tigers. Next year, she will be attending the School of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Ally would like to thank her parents, Karen and Douglas Rooker, her sister Amy, and the rest of her family for their contribution to her success and for their tremendous support and love.

, daughter of Jim and Kim Davis and salutatorian of the Class of 2011 with a 3.996 grade-point average, is studious and goal-oriented. She has pushed herself academically over the course of high school by taking AP and Honors courses in literature and composition, history, calculus, and government. In addition to these advanced classes, she also took many science courses to further her education. Elizabeth has participated in Bella Voce, the all-women’s chorus, all four years in high school. She is a member of the National Honor Society, where she has served as chair of the tutoring committee, and has been a member of Captains Club and Student Council. Elizabeth is very dedicated to sports as well. She has played basketball for four years, earning a spot on the varsity team her junior and senior years. At the end of her senior year, she received the coach’s award for commitment and hard work. She has been on the varsity soccer team since her freshman year and has been captain three years. Elizabeth has received awards for All-State Honorable Mention, All-Regional Team, All-District Team, All-Metro League Team and Most Valuable Player. Besides participating in school sports, Elizabeth has been on a travel soccer team since she was very young and has been captain for the past six years. As a result of all of this hard work, she has been given the opportunity to play soccer at Siena Heights University in Adrian. At Siena Heights, Elizabeth plans to earn a degree in biology and then continue her education to become a pharmacist. She wants to thank her parents, Jim and Kim Davis, and her brother Jacob for all the love and support they have given her.

, son of Lisa and Phil Chapin, is No. 6 in the Class of 2011 with a 3.984 grade-point average. Riley is proud that he has maintained a spot in the Top 10 while pursuing the most rigorous schedule possible at Fenton High School. As a member of the first cohort of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, he has taken seven IB classes and Advanced Placement courses in history, government and calculus. Riley has also been involved in many extracurricular activities and has participated on many athletic teams. He played football for four years and was honored for his performance on and off the field when he was named First Team Academic All-State last fall. He is also a three-year member of the varsity track and field team and hoped to compete at the state level later this season in the long jump and the 4 x 100 meter relay. Riley has completed numerous hours of community service through his church, National Honor Society, Student Council and IB Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS). As a member of the Captains Club, he has supervised several athletic events for students at the Knopf Learning Center. Most recently, Riley coordinated the efforts of several of his fellow IB CAS students in preparing and serving meals at the Ronald McDonald House of Detroit. Next year, he will be attending the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor to pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He would like to thank his parents, Lisa and Phil Chapin, for their support during his college search and his entire high school career.

Kelsey Vuillemot, daughter of Charles and Karen Vuillemot, ranks seventh in Fenton’s Class of 2011 with a 3.977 grade-point average. Kelsey has challenged herself throughout her high school career, excelling in Honors, AP, and IB courses such as AP American Government, AP Calculus and IB History of the Americas HL. Kelsey takes great pride in her dedication to community service and her completion of over 700 service hours within both her school and community. She has volunteered for the past nine years, at Zonta Club’s Safety Town, served on Fenton’s 175th Anniversary Queen’s Court and donated her time and efforts to many other worthwhile causes. During her time in high school, Kelsey has also been involved in Student Council, KEY Club and the Genesee County Youth Advisory Committee. In addition, she has been an active member of the National Honor Society, where she has served on the executive board as the Public Relations Officer. Kelsey has enjoyed being a part of the Fenton Marching Tigers for the past four years, where she played the alto saxophone. She will miss her dance family at Fenton School of Dance and Academy (FSD), where she has danced for the past 15 years. As a part of FSD, Kelsey has competed as a part of the senior tapline, small group tapline and hip-hop crew. She received her Silver Award from the Girl Scouts of America in 2009. This past year, Kelsey has also worked part-time at The UPS Store in Fenton. In the fall, she will attend the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where she will pursue a double major in both Political Science and Business Administration. Kelsey would like to thank her parents, her brother Mark and her grandparents for their continued support and encouragement.

, daughter of Angela and Michael Barnard, is No. 8 in the class with a 3.975 grade-point average. Kayla is proud of her outstanding academic achievement throughout high school. She has found great success while taking AP, IB and Honors courses, including Honors Literature and Composition, AP History, AP Government, AP Calculus and IB Spanish HL 1 and 2. In addition to her school work, Kayla also participated in Student Council, KEY Club and National Honor Society. These extracurricular programs have afforded her the opportunity for a great deal of community service and school involvement. In addition to her school work, Kayla managed to spend several hours a week working her part-time job at the Fenton Michael’s. She also enjoys spending time with her family and supporting those around her. Her desire to work with others, give aid to the community and provide support has made her realize that a career in the medical field will be perfect for her. Kayla loves animals and plans to enter the field of veterinary medicine. She will continue her education at Michigan State University, where she will study zoology and Spanish. Kayla plans to earn her degree in science in order to become a veterinary professional. Kayla would like to thank her family for all their love and support, including her dad, grandmother and siblings. In addition, she would also like to give a special thanks to her mother, Angela Barnard, for always being there.

Kaitlin Shaw, daughter of James and Susan Shaw, is eighth in the class with a grade-point average of 3.969. Kaitlin has taken academically challenging classes all throughout her high school career. Some of these include AP United States History, AP Government, and all IB courses. While taking such advanced course work, Kaitlin has also balanced a demanding extracurricular schedule. She has been a four-year member of the cross country team and the girls track team, serving as captain for both sports her senior year. Kaitlin has also dedicated a majority of her time to community service, believing that helping others is one of the most important things one can do. She has been actively involved in the National Honor Society, KEY Club and Student Council. Her role as president in KEY Club has allowed her to directly contribute to the well being of the community. Kaitlin has been a member of Student Council all four years. This year she was elected Senior Class President and put together the Homecoming parade. She has received several awards for her volunteer work, including the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen award. Next year, Kaitlin will attend the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. To complete her undergraduate studies, she has been awarded the Transfer Option at Cornell University, where she will enter the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Kaitlin hopes to eventually earn a degree in International Affairs and volunteer for the Peace Corps. She would like to thank her parents, James and Susan Shaw, and her siblings, Sarah, Christopher, and Grace, for all of their encouragement and support over the years.

Ryan Delecki, son of Matt and Cheryl Delecki, is tenth in the Class of 2011 with a grade-point average of 3.953. Throughout high school, Ryan chose to challenge himself by taking some of the hardest courses offered. These include Honors Literature and Composition, IB Math, IB Spanish SL 1 and 2, IB Biology 1 and 2, and AP Calculus BC. While taking these demanding courses, he has also been a member of the National Honor Society and participated in Captains Club. In addition, he represented his school on the varsity baseball team his junior and senior years. Ryan was also a member of the varsity hockey team all four years of high school. In his junior year, the team won a Metro League Championship with a 14-0 record in league play. During his final year on the team, Ryan was captain and was honored to be selected First Team All-League. In the fall of 2011, he will join his brother at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where he will pursue a degree in business. Ryan would like to recognize and thank his parents, Matt and Cheryl; his siblings, Alex, Carli, Elise and Marissa; and his grandparents, Stan and Ann Delecki and John and Connie Cislo, for all of their support.
