Fenton Teachers Approve Contract, Summer School Begins

Agreement will save district $2.5 million, school using new online classes for summer.

Just because officials and students are on summer break, doesn’t mean school-related activities have ceased as well.

Fenton teachers approved a contract with the school district that will save Fenton Area Public Schools $2.5 million during the next two years, the Fenton Press reported Wednesday. The article stated the three-year contract freezes wages, salary step increases and longevity pay. The teachers also agreed to contribute 10 percent this year and 13 percent next year towards health insurance costs. Instead of a salary cut, teachers will have two unpaid work days this year and one unpaid furlough day next year.

New-school summer school program

Meanwhile in the classroom, some students got back to work Wednesday with a new online summer school system in conjunction with seven other schools in the county.

“We are really nervous and excited to try it,” Fenton High School principal Mark Suchowski.

He said students have the ability to work at their own pace. They must come into the school and work during designated times, but then can work ahead at home or elsewhere.

“This orientation might work better for some students who had challenges this year,” Suchowski said.
