Lake Fenton Middle School '3-Peats' the MEAP

Students post top scores in Genesee County.

Here is a brief look at the MEAP results for Lake Fenton Community Schools.

Lake Fenton Middle School three-peat

Lake Fenton posted the best scores in Genesee County for reading, writing and social studies. They had the second highest science scores and the third highest math scores.

The sixth and seventh grade students placed first in the county for highest composite scores. The eighth-graders posted the fourth highest composite scores in the school.

If you combine the grade levels or the composite scores, the students had the highest ranking scores in the county.

"Amazing kids, amazing community, amazing staff and very high expectations regarding teaching and learning and even higher exxpectations on building character. That has been our recipe for success," Lake Fenton Middle School principal Dan Ferguson said. "Our school community works together very well, but with any successful team, we have been looking for areas we can grow to better prepare our children in the years ahead and we have plenty of work to do."

Lake Fenton drops below state averages in eighth grade math results

Proficiency in eighth grade math was the only subject and level Lake Fenton dipped below state averages, according to statistics provided by the Michigan Department of Education. The eighth-grade state average was 32.5 percent, while Lake Fenton scored 30.5 percent.

Lake Fenton did top state average in every other subject and level. Some of the most impressive scores came from seventh-grade writing with 73.1 percent of student proficient, while the state average was 51.7. Lake Fenton also scored well in sixth-grade reading (84.3 percent proficient, 68.2 percent - state average) and third grade math (60.9 percent proficient, 40.9 - state average.)

Writing, social studies scores rise across the board

Lake Fenton fourth and seventh graders were able to increase writing scores. Fourth-grade students went from 46.5 percent proficient in 2011 to 66.9 proficient in 2012. Seventh-graders went from 73.1 percent to 82.2 percent.

Sixth-graders raised their percent proficient in social studies from 37.1 percent to 51.6 percent. Ninth-graders improved slightly from 36.2 percent to 38.5 percent.

"The students have done a great job buying into our program including a high number of new students to Lake Fenton. The best part is our new students look to others to learn what the Lake Fenton experience is all about and our student role models have made us all very proud," Ferguson said.

Lake Fenton has invited its school community for a MEAP presentation at 8:30 a.m Wednesday at Lake Fenton Middle School.
