Fenton Basketball Gets Recognition for Big Upset

Tigers mentioned for beating Clarkston, but lose No. 1 ranked Saginaw 59-48 Monday night.

The Fenton basketball team received plenty of praise for their in Friday's district championship.

The Tigers were mentioned in both the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News in the newspapers' previews of the boys basketball regionals.

He is the Fenton player who hit a double-clutch three-pointer as time expired in the second overtime to give the Tigers a 68-66 victory over Clarkston. It snapped Clarkston's string of 18 consecutive district titles, and it was Fenton's first in over a decade."

The Detroit News preview mentioned several other upsets that occurred in the district round, but had a big focus on Fenton.

"(Clarkston) coach Dan Fife told me after not to be satisfied. As we shook hands he held my hand a second longer, looked me in the eye in a way of saying he meant it. I got a quick coaching lesson from him there," stated Tim Olszewski in the article.

The Detroit News picked Fenton's opponent Monday night, No. 1 ranked Saginaw, to come out of the region.

Saginaw High took an early lead in the regional semifinal Monday night at Midland Dow High School and never trailed to get the 59-48 victory over Fenton, according to MLive.

"They're very fundamentally sound," Saginaw coach Julian Taylor stated in the article. "They know basketball. They did a great job, and I tip my hat off to Fenton. They're a good team. They were 22-1 for a reason."

Cory Cox led Fenton with 17 points and six rebounds, while Ryan Hickoff had 12 points and seven rebounds and Dylan Hickoff eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his Tigers’ career scoring six points, according to the .
