Fenton Racks Up TD's in 45-21 Win Against Marquette

Tigers advance to host Okemos at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.

Marquette wanted to pound the ball against the football team in the opening round of the playoffs Saturday.

The Tigers defense didn't allow it to happen, letting the Tigers offense do what they do best: put on a show.

Fenton lit up the scoreboard in a 45-21 thrashing of the Redmen, who traveled a long way from the upper peninsula for the contest.

"Our defense didn't allow them to control the ball," Fenton coach Jeff Setzke said. "That gave our offense a chance to spread the field out and make plays with our athletes."

Marquette marched down the field on its first drive, which was initially was halted when the Tigers stuffed a fourth and goal play, but Fenton fumbled two plays later, leading to the Redmen scoring the first touchdown of the game.

The Tigers defense held tough after that, however, as Marquette wouldn't score again until late in the third quarter on a blocked punt return. The Redmen also added a fourth quarter score with the game well in hand.

In between, the Fenton passing attack took control as Houston Shaw threw for four touchdowns with Mitch Shegos hauling in two of them. Fenton totaled 430 yards of offense as Shaw completed 21-of-28 passes for 275 yards. Shegos had eight receptions for 100 yards.

Fenton advances to host Okemos at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5 in the second round of the Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs.
