Several Fenton Area Athletes to Continue Sports Careers

Many high school students commit to colleges and universities on National Signing Day.

Several Fenton area athletes made commitments to schools and signed letters of intent to play sports at the next level Wednesday.

Fenton wide receiver Mitch Shegos signed with Notre Dame College in Ohio. Shegos - 6-1, 200 - set a school record with 14 touchdowns with 11 reception TD's in 2012, while compiling 1,357 receiving yards. He also made the All-Metro League as a receiver and defensive back.

“...Mitchell Shegos is one of the most versatile athletes we signed this year. He is a do-it-all type of guy, and I can’t wait to witness the impact he will have on our team," stated Notre Dame Head Coach Adam Howard.

Four Fenton area athletes from Powers Catholic High School also signed letters of intent to play football in college. Garrett Pougnet will play at Southern Illinois University, Prescott Myers and Derek Trecha signed with Northwood, while Chris Koenigsknecht will play at Hillsdale. Fenton High School senior Nick Chappell also signed a letter of intent to play football at Hillsdale.

Aside from football, Fenton junior Ellie Cowger has committed to the University of Minnesota for softball. She verbally committed in the fall and will sign her letter of intent next year. Cowger's older sisters Kate and Tori both played for the Golden Gophers, while Sammi Cowger chose Ball State University.

In 2012, Ellie batted .463 with 51 runs and 65 stolen bases, which ranks 11th all-time in the Michigan High School Athletic Association for a single season.
