Chasing the Dragon Making Impact on Students

Chasing the Dragon was a huge success at Lake Fenton Middle School.

Community Parent’s was shown to the students on Wednesday, December 14. The true-to-life messages regarding the dangers of drug use are during these programs.  Some adults are even brought to tears at times when they view it, so how would it resonate with these children?

A team of volunteers came together to mentor, console, and just be there for the kids in their classrooms following this assembly. These volunteers were comprised of high school students, Young Life Genesee County leaders and members, recovering alcoholics and addicts, local youth pastors, and other concerned citizens. They paired up and entered each classroom after the presentation to discuss the children’s feelings, fears, questions, and anything else the kids wanted to talk about. The kids were also told how to follow up with school counselors or staff if they were having issues dealing with the presentation or with drug use in
general.

I was in a couple of these classroom sessions and can attest that the “dragon” is truly being chased out of these schools as a result of Chasing the Dragon and other efforts of the volunteers.  The vast majority of the kids were definitely touched by the presentation and were repelled by the idea of being trapped by the demons of a life using drugs.  They asked highly intelligent questions, and some even shared stories of their own experiences regarding exposure to drug use of others.  A few exhibited mild signs that the presentation upset them, but most were inquisitive to learn more about this dangerous epidemic in our community.  The evidence was overwhelming that they never wanted to begin using drugs, wanted to help stop drug use, and some even asked where loved ones or friends could find help. This day was obviously successful in driving the “dragon” further away from the majority of these children.
