Easy Home Staging Tips

With just a few quick (and inexpensive!) updates to your home, you can stage it to sell. Make it easy and appealing for buyers to imagine themselves living in your house, and your home will sell that much faster.

1. Clear the clutter!

This may seem obvious, but it’s a big deal – simply clearing the clutter off of every visible surface makes a big difference in staging your home. Not only does the house look clean, it gives the impression that there is plenty of storage.

2. Group your furniture in the middle of a room

It may seem like that couch really should go against the wall, but thinking outside of the “all furniture against the walls” box can make a big difference! Try an area rug in the middle of a small formal living room, with a loveseat floating on one edge, and two chairs across from it. Add a coffee table in the middle, and suddenly your small room feels bigger and more functional.

3. Reclaim unused space

If you have a “junk” room, clean it up and stage it as a home office! Or add a small chair and end table to a stairway landing. Creating functional spaces in areas that are currently not being used can help buyers to envision how they would use the house to fit their lifestyle. Don’t be afraid to get creative!

4. Up the wattage

Your home will show to its fullest advantage when it’s well lit. Change out your light bulbs for a higher wattage, add lamps where appropriate, open the curtains, and let that light shine! Plenty of light creates a happier, more welcoming atmosphere – easily and inexpensively!

5. The rule of three

When accessorizing, you don’t want to do too much, but you don’t want to do too little, either. So how do you strike the perfect balance? Use the rule of three! A trio of objects that work well together make a great grouping – and have greater effect than any one accessory on its own. Imagine a triangle on the surface you’re decorating, and place an accessory on each “point” of the triangle. Voila! Instant appeal.

6. Get Fresh – for cheap!

Fresh plants, flowers, and other natural elements can add a lot of natural appeal – but that expense can add up quickly. Save your budget for other areas, and accessorize with plants and flowers from your yard! An armful of holly branches full of berries can fill a vase on the cheap, yet make a big impact. Try branches of fall foliage in autumn, spray paint bare branches in gold for high impact for only a few dollars, or fill a decorative bowl with a handful of pinecones. Look around your yard for inspiration – there’s always something you can use!

With just a few quick (and inexpensive!) updates to your home, you can stage it to sell. A clean, streamlined, decluttered home that is accessorized just right can make all the difference. Make it easy and appealing for buyers to imagine themselves living in your house, and your home will sell that much faster.
