Olympics 2012: Olympics Medal Tally as of Saturday Morning
Bolstered by dominance in swimming, the U.S. has edged past China to lead in both gold and total medals so far in 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Russia is third in total medals, while South Korea ranks third in gold as of this morning, Saturday.
After several days with China in the lead, the United States now stands first in both gold medals and total medals, thanks to the extraordinary performance of its swimmers.
In the tally as of early this morning, Saturday, American athletes had won 21 gold medals and 43 overall. China was a close second with 20 gold and 42 overall.
“They have the whole nation behind them,” said Fenton resident .

America's success rests largely on swimming, with 14, or two-thirds, of its gold in that category. On Friday, Michael Phelps won gold in the 100-meter butterfly, raising his personal lifetime Olympic medal count to 21. The 17-year-old Missy Franklin on Friday took her third gold of this year's games, setting a new record in the 200-meter backstroke.
China's gold strength has been divided equally among three categories, with four each in swimming, diving and weightlifting.

And while China and the U.S. have been neck-and-neck for first and second during the first week of competition at the 2012 Summer Games in London, the third place and fourth place positions have changed often.
Japan ranked third in total medals two days ago, with Germany and France tied for fourth. Now Russia holds that position, with 23 total medals, followed closely by host nation Great Britain with 22.
South Korea now holds a narrow lead for third place gold, with 9 medals, followed by France and Great Britain with 8 each.
The standings may well change after today with 25 gold medals at stake on what the official London Olympics Web site calls "Super Saturday."
