Adventures In Households, The Joys of Being An Adult

We get a new washer and dryer, and a new set of perspectives.

As a kid growing up, there are lots of events that take place that you want to recreate as an adult for your children. For example, this was the first year we were able to take our children out shopping for a real Christmas tree to cut down, something both of us enjoyed and we hadn't had an opportunity to do with our kids yet. (That was a hilarious story - but I will save it for another post.)

Then there are some events that you may not necessarily care to repeat ever again in your life, such as the way my neighborhood came together after a tornado hit several houses and how several families had gigantic barbecue dinners every night because of the lack of electricity and all of our freezer meat thawing.

Even better yet, are the events you never really paid attention to and now you wish maybe you would have. For instance, purchasing new appliances. I can remember,  as a child, that we had a new dishwasher installed at one point. I remember it because we had an avocado green one that was replaced with a shiny black one. I couldn't tell you any more about the day that it was replaced. I also remember that at one point as a child, we got a washer and a dryer. This was a bittersweet recollection, because I have fond memories of donuts for breakfast on laundry day at the laundromat. Funny how the donuts stopped on laundry days when we didn't have to pass the donut shop to do the laundry.

Now though, I wish I would have paid more attention to the installation of our washer and dryer. They say that hindsight is 20/20, and I learn new meanings to this every day.

We bought a washer and dryer today. This is great news, it means no more hauling a mini-van's worth of laundry to the mother-in-law's house (and no more weird pink spots on my white shirts). Because we didn't buy new, we had to install ourselves. This is normally not a problem when things come with directions (they didn't), or if I am the one doing the install (I didn't). It is also not a problem when hoses are color-coded (they aren't), or if hook-ups were marked (they weren't). Let me just say, I am in love with my fiance.

I love him dearly, as he grabs a nice (blue) towel to mop the floor. The floor that got wet because the hoses were missing washers. The floor that got wet because of the connections not being tight. I love him dearly as the bleach water from inside the washer drains onto the floor, and my (used-to-be-blue) towel is used to mop it all up. I am so excited to be an adult. I know the kids will remember the day we got our washer and dryer for awhile. At least they will remember the loud laughter as I shake my head in disbelief. I know they will remember being up an hour after bedtime because we can't keep it down with water spraying everywhere.

I wish I would have paid more attention to the day they installed my washer and dryer when I was a kid. At least, I might still have blue towels.
