Meet the Fenton Teen Who Has Been Volunteering at an Orphanage in Guatemala

Steven Rachor has been already planning a return trip to the Central American country.

Fenton resident Steven Rachor recently returned from a mission trip to Guatemala, where he helped take care of 40 orphans, including a 5-year-old girl his family has been trying to adopt for five years.

Fenton Patch recently talked to Steven upon his return.

Family: Son of James and Cinda Rachor, oldest of seven siblings.

School: 2011 Fenton High School graduate.

Activities: Played football, basketball and baseball. Member of National Honor Society.

Awards: Won the service award and scholarship from the American Red Cross upon graduation.

College: Will be attending Liberty University in Virginia to pursue a career in medicine.

Mission trips: Steven has been on several different christian mission  trips around the world, including in Antiqua (Caribbean) and Guatemala ( Central America).

The best part of going on a mission trip: "Just to see the impact in these peoples lives; giving them a food basket, putting in a bunk bed. To see the reaction on their face It gives you that drive to go back to help make a difference in the world and their lives."

Is it scary?:"The first time was scary. There are army men with guns on every block. You don't see that here. Their government is unstable, so that;s unsettling. But you put trust in God for your safety."

Did you see anything that surprised you? "The thing that hit me so hard, even harder on second trip, is everything we take for granted. Drinking water, being able to know where the next meal is coming form, people don’t have a shower, drinking water and have no idea where their next meal is coming from."
