2 Fenton Students Earn National Recognition for Composting Project

Lauren Hickmott and Erin Kaye were named among eight finalist teams for the Siemens Foundation's "We Can Change the World Challenge."

Two eighth graders at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School in Fenton were recently named among eight finalist teams for the Siemens Foundation's "We Can Change The World Challenge." Lauren Hickmott and Erin Kaye completed a composting project for a school science fair that included providing residents buckets to teach them how to compost, according to an article at mlive.com. The We Can Change the World Challenge is a national environmental sustainability challenge that provides K-12 students the tools and inspiration to improve their schools, their communities and their world through project-based learning, according to the Siemens web site. Fenton Student Work to be Showcased at Upcoming Event

Fenton Area Public Schools invites the community to the International Baccalaureate Showcase May 11.

Fenton Area Public Schools is inviting the community to a showcase next month that will let residents see "a world class education in action." The International Baccalaureate Showcase will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11 at Andrew G. Schmidt Middle School, according to a post on the school district's web site. The event, which is free and open to all, will include live performances by Chinese Acrobats at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., Fenton student performances and a variety of International foods for sampling. Student learning will be showcased by student projects and displays from all grade levels K-12. "See where an IB Education has and can take our students," the post states. Lake Fenton Students Earn Spot in World Robotics Competition

The HAZMATs finished fifth at the Michigan State Competition on April 15, qualifying to attend the competition in St. Louis, Missouri April 24-27.

Students on the robotics team at Lake Fenton High School recently finished fifth place at the Michigan FIRST Robotics State Competition, earning a spot in the world competition later this month. On Saturday, the team - called the HAZMATs - earned one of the 27 berths that Michigan fills at the FIRST World Championships held in St. Louis, Missouri April 24-27. The high school's seven-year-old team has been recognized for many achievements, but this is the first time they have qualified to attend the St. Louis competition, according to a press release from the team. Fenton Area Schools Hosts Kindergarten, Young 5's Registration

District will offer half- and full-day kindergarten options for 2013-14 school year.

Fenton Area Public Schools is hosting Kindergarten and Young 5's Registration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 13. Registration takes place at the Administration Building, located at 3100 Owen Road in Fenton. Fenton Area Public Schools participates in an open enrollment Schools of Choice Program. All students are welcome regardless of resident district, according to the district's web site. This year, Fenton will offer full- and half-day kindergarten and young fives programs. Former Principal Jerry Kramer to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

The Lake Fenton Community Schools Foundation will present the recognition May 18 at Spring Meadows Country Club.

The Lake Fenton Community Schools Foundation has selected former principal Jerry Kramer as this year's “Lifetime Achievement Award” honoree. Kramer will receive the recognition during a presentation at 6 p.m. May 18 at Spring Meadows Country Club, the Tri-County Times reports. The former Lake Fenton High School principal retired from the district in 2011 after 27 years of service as an administrator, teacher and coach. The then 61-year-old had been in education for 38 years. Tickets for the award ceremony are available at the Lake Fenton administrative office, the Tri-County Times reports.

Linden Parents Worried About Bullying in School

Area school districts have taken steps to combat bullying, but some parents say it hasn't been effective.

Linden parents believe bullying is still happening regularly at Linden High School. Several parents spoke on the issue on Wednesday's school board meeting, Mlive Media reported, claiming incidents have been reported without much action. The article stated that School Board President Scott Maker said the district is looking more into the issue. After the suicide death of Josh Pacheco in November, a junior at Linden High School, Fenton Patch reported that superintendents were discussing how their schools handle bullying. Linden Community Schools added anti-bullying hot lines students can call or text. Linden Superintendent Ed Koledo said the district would have suicide and bullying counselors come in to work with the entire district, …

Fenton Project Graduation Selling Messages in a Bottle

Group trying to raise $40,000 for all-night graduation party.

Have a message you would like to send a Fenton senior? Fenton's Project Graduation organizers have a creative way for you do to so: A message in a bottle. The message in a plastic bottle stands about seven inches and includes sand, seashells and a special note from you to your senior. The cost per message in bottle is $10 and all funds raised will go to all-night party at Andrew G. Schmidt Middle School after graduation on June 2. The bottles will be handed out to seniors after the graduation party. Full payment and order forms are due no later than April 15.
