Lake Fenton High School's Starfish Initiative holds its first public event.
A large group of walkers from the Fenton area and beyond braved cold temperatures Sunday to join Lake Fenton High School’s anti-bullying organization, The Starfish Initiative, in honoring the memory of Josh Pacheco, a bullying victim who committed suicide. The walkers started out at Andrew G. Schmidt Middle School, in the Fenton Area Public Schools district and hiked to Bush Park. Pacheco was 17 and a junior at Linden High School. He committed suicide on Nov. 27. His parents said bullying played a role in his death and said Pacheco was gay, which led to him being bullied both inside and outside of school, according to the Flint Journal. Lake Fenton High School senior Matt Wilson, who began The Starfish Initiative, said he was bullied as a …

City holds community brainstorming session at A.G. Schmidt Middle School on Wednesday; council to discuss strategic planning in January, mayor says.
Approximately 120 to 130 residents gathered on Wednesday evening at A.G. Schmidt Middle School to share their vision of Fenton in 2018. Ideas included improving walkability, demolishing the old Topps fruit market building off Caroline Street, a trolley loop, and an improved or new library. City council members led six groups in brainstorming ideas, as Mayor Sue Osborn, City Manager Lynn Markland and facilitator Dr. Lew Bender circulated. City employees helped record the ideas, and then Bender asked for each group's top picks. Many people mentioned demolishing the vacant fruit market building and adding a parking structure or another feature there. Layne Schupbach, of Fenton, said it could become home to an ice rink. She also suggested …

Purpose is to gather input from community on what they'd like Fenton's future to look like, city manager says.
What should Fenton’s future look like? Fenton city officials and administrators are hoping for many participants at Wednesday’s vision session, 6 p.m. Dec. 5 in the Andrew G. Schmidt Middle School cafeteria, 3255 Donaldson Dr., in Fenton. The vision session is to gather information on what the community would like to see in Fenton in the future, said City Manager Lynn Markland. City council members will help lead brainstorming sessions of groups of people, gathering input for the full council to review and use in a strategic goal setting plan for Fenton. AGS Middle School’s cafeteria can hold at least 75 to 100 people or more, Markland added. Dinner and child care will be provided. “We are hoping for a large turnout,” he said. “We’ve been …

Kids report good first day of school; administrators and teachers excited about new academic year.
The first day of school isn't without some bumps in the road, but Fenton students, teachers and principals are excited about the new academic year. A new locker combination takes a little getting used to, and so do new classes, but the first day is really fun, said seventh-grader Ethan Krantz, of Andrew G. Schmidt Middle School. He's looking forward to meeting new people and having gym class next semester, but he said he had a good summer as well. "Most of the time, I just sat around but I went on a couple of cool trips," he said. "And I got to sleep in, which was really nice." Sixth-grader Alexis Skinner said she was a little nervous about her first day of middle school, but now she's excited and "it's been great." She met new students …

One important issue to look into is all the money used to purchase chemicals to treat Fentons City Water Supply. One of those chemicals is called Fluoride. Most people have heard of it, but not many have researched the subject. Please look into this with an open mind. Fluoride: 1.) Its a Industrial Waste product from the aluminum, metal, and fertilizer industries 2.) Toothpaste that has Fluoride …   more ›
