The Fenton Planning Commission recommended a proposed ordinance last week, while homeowners association voted against ice rink.
With colder weather on the way, the Fenton Planning Commission is recommending an ordinance on ice rinks in residential areas to city council. John Jones, the property owner who built an ice rink in the Andover Woods subdivision in Fenton thanked the commissioners for acting quickly, saying the proposed ordinance is a framework that people can move forward with. The city placed a temporary ban on ice rinks in residential neighborhoods. If it doesn’t move forward, there will be a lot of unhappy little skaters, Jones added. He builds the rink because he sees its value for the children in the neighborhood, he said. Jones doesn’t live in Andover Woods but owns property there. Fenton resident Malissa Bossardet, who was instrumental in having …

It would provide time to develop an ordinance after complaints surfaced last winter about a large rink in a side yard, officials say.
After some controversy over an ice rink in a subdivision last winter and requests for permission for rinks this winter, the Fenton City Council could approve a temporary ban. City Manager Lynn Markland asked council for direction at Monday's work session. If council wants to pass an ordinance, a moratorium on residential ice skating rinks would deny the use of large structures that aren't in people's back yards. A moratorium, or temporary ban, would take the pressure off city administrators, said Councilman Les Bland. Some have already asked city administrators about rinks this winter, Markland said. Mayor Sue Osborn said council hopes to have an ordinance in place by the time ice skating season begins. Many families use their back yards …

Bob Campbell and John Jones stick to their beliefs in Andover Woods dispute.
The faceoff between neighbors about a skating rink has continued with both neighbors sticking to their beliefs. The conversation even made its way onto 97.1 The Ticket, Detroit sports talk radio, on Wednesday afternoon. People were calling the Karsh and Anderson show around noon Wednesday and ice rink owner John Jones heard people getting his name wrong. He said he called in and explained who he was. “I was on for two or three minutes just explaining the situation and how much I invest in the rink,” Jones said. His Andover Woods neighbor Bob Campbell is sticking to his guns as well, saying the Homeowner’s Association violated rules in approving the rink and that the rink violates the association’s aesthetics ordinance. He also says that …

Council members say debate is a residential issue.
A dispute over a neighborhood hockey rink skated from the ice to Fenton City Hall Monday. Fenton resident Bob Campbell, who has placed complaints about the rink, addressed the Fenton City Council during a call to the audience that he is not against ice rinks or youth recreation, but rather against how the situation of an Andover Woods subdivision ice rink has been handled. Campbell has said he believes the rink is not aesthetically pleasing and lowers property values. He also said he believes it violates Homeowner's Association infraction of aesthetics and city ordinances. He said the ice rink was ruled against twice by the Homeowner’s Association and reversed for reasons not clear to him. “Our dispute is not with one person, but with our …

What is this hurting? Is the sound of laughter and whoops of delight painful to your ears? I am floored that people, no doubt those who lament "young people today," their obesity and laziness, would oppose some good old fashioned fun for kids.   more ›
