Fenton Students Head Back to School

Kids report good first day of school; administrators and teachers excited about new academic year.

The first day of school isn't without some bumps in the road, but Fenton students, teachers and principals are excited about the new academic year. A new locker combination takes a little getting used to, and so do new classes, but the first day is really fun, said seventh-grader Ethan Krantz, of Andrew G. Schmidt Middle School. He's looking forward to meeting new people and having gym class next semester, but he said he had a good summer as well. "Most of the time, I just sat around but I went on a couple of cool trips," he said. "And I got to sleep in, which was really nice." Sixth-grader Alexis Skinner said she was a little nervous about her first day of middle school, but now she's excited and "it's been great." She met new students …

Teachers and other employees made sure the new students, and the 160 sixth-graders, are settled in. "We have more than 50 new students to our building," Ferguson said. "As a district, we have over 100 new students." At Lake Fenton Middle School, Chloe Wittersheim, eighth grade, said her favorite class is language arts. She's excited to see her friends, after a fun summer that included hanging out with friends and visiting Chicago. Fellow Lake Fenton eighth-grader Max Schupbach said, "It was a little weird" walking into school again, but he's looking forward to …

Fenton Staff Offers Tips for Students with 'Butterflies'

Getting a good night's sleep and a good breakfast are important for kindergarten, while staying organized and making school a priority are keys to sixth grade success.

The first day of school is an opportunity for students at a new building to begin making lots of new friends and broadening their horizons, teachers and counselors say. Nevertheless, there will be some children who have "butterflies" in their stomachs about starting kindergarten, or moving from elementary school to middle school. Many new kindergarten students are used to being away from home and in class, since they've had daycare or preschool, said kindergarten teacher Teresa Squires, from Fenton's North Road Elementary School. It's her second time teaching kindergarten, after teaching it 20 years ago. "There aren't as many criers as there used to be," Squires said. But there are usually a few students who are nervous. Squires recommends…

Lake Fenton, Fenton Schools Ready to Greet Students with Changes, Goals

All-day kindergarten, improved communication are highlights for both districts; Fenton High School to eliminate Top 10 beginning with Class of 2016.

The 2012-13 school year is ready to begin on Tuesday, but students aren't the only ones with goals and new looks for the upcoming year. The Fenton and Lake Fenton school districts have their aspirations -- and improvements throughout the buildings -- set to greet children when they walk into class after Labor Day. Fenton Area Public Schools (FAPS) has some improvements in store, Dr. Timothy Jalkanen, superintendent, reports. The big one is a new website for the school district, which will go live in October. It's designed to improve communication across the district, with both parents and community members at large, Jalkanen said. Communication When Fenton developed the strategic plan that the school board adopted toward the end of last …

Top 10 is usually based solely on GPA. Often, studentsbwill refrain from taking more challenging courses because it can affect their GPAs. I've known students in the top 10 who have taken easier courses, including many P. E. courses when there were more challenging electives available.   more ›

Fenton Families Gear Up for Homeschool

Preparations for going back to school include new supplies, learning materials and lesson plans.

Students everywhere are getting ready for school by reviewing their schedules, shopping for new clothes and gathering up the necessary supplies. However, not all of them will walk to school or board a bus on the first day of class. Homeschooled students will often begin their studies by taking a seat at the kitchen table, in front of their personal laptop or at the family computer desk. That means for homeschooling families who follow a traditional school calendar with a summer break, parents are studying curriculum choices, ordering books and setting academic goals. Their children are starting to mentally transition from “summer fun” to “school’s-in-session” mode. While that sounds like a monumental task, children are often eager for the …

I applaud these families for helping their children be successful. I wish more parents were as involved as these parents are. The comments by Lenny & Becky are beyond ridiculous.   more ›

Prepare for College with Tips For Avoiding Thefts from Autos on Campus

A Michigan-based company recommends 'proper precautions' to avoid these crimes.

A total of 240 auto crimes occurred at colleges across Michigan in 2010. As students begin flooding campuses statewide, Help Eliminate Auto Thefts (H.E.A.T.) offers tips on how to keep from being a victim of auto theft on campus.  “Leaving car doors unlocked and belongings on display is far too common at colleges and universities,” said Terri Miller, director of the Michigan-based company. “Campuses aren’t havens from crime. Students need to be aware of the risks if they want to keep their vehicles safe.” Most auto theft-related crime can be prevented with proper precautions. Following are tips from H.E.A.T. for steering clear of auto theft on campus: If you witness an auto theft crime or suspicious activity, report it day or night to …

Fenton Tigers Football Aiming for State Championship This Season

Twenty-three seniors return to lead a 2012 team with 'a lot of potential,' head coach Jeff Setzke says.

With two district titles to build on, Fenton High School varsity football coach Jeff Setzke wants his Tigers to reach beyond that this season. After districts, the goal is a regional championship, which Fenton has battled for but lost each of the past two years. And after clinching a regional, it's one more game to the state finals, Setzke said. Fenton wants to be at, and hopefully win, the state finals in 2012. "We are working on that," he said. "We have pretty high expectations." The Tigers have a good team this year with a lot of potential, said Setzke, who has coached the Tigers for seven seasons. "Time will tell how that potential works out," he said. The seniors on the team are performing well, as seniors are expected to do and the …

Oakland County School to host grand opening for addition later this month.

Holly Academy is one of the 286 Michigan schools that have been designated as Reward Schools for either high student achievement or making tremendous progress in student achievement, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) announced last week.  Reward Schools is the highest achievement of the three new school designations. "I was contacted by MDE the day prior to the statewide report cards being issued and was informed that Holly Academy has been designated as a Reward school based on our high academic performance, placing us in the top 5% ranking of all districts in the state,” said Holly Academy Director Julie Kildee.  “This designation validates the coordinated effort put forth by our exceptional staff. As a true professional …
