Cindy Menzies is a breast cancer survivor. She is also an oncology nurse who never expected to walk into her own office as a patient. But there is a silver lining to the two surgeries, seven weeks of radiation and five years of Tamoxifen that Menzies endured, and her father was the first to recognize it. "My dad is the ultimate optimist," said Menzies, who lives and works in Oakland County. "When I told him I had breast cancer, the first thing he said was, 'Wow, you're going to be such a better nurse from this.' "And you know what? It's so true." While Ann Romney has taken to the presidential campaign trail to support her husband Mitt Romney, she also has rallied her efforts for another cause: breast cancer awareness. Ann Romney, a native of Bloomfield Hills and a student at Cranbrook, is a breast cancer survivor. In 2008, Ann Romney had surgery to remove a precancerous lump from her breast, according to the Boston Globe. Mitt Romney told CNN that Barack Obama, at the time the president-elect, called to offer his prayers to the Romney family. So while Ann Romney has campaigned for her husband this month, including a stop in Bloomfield Township on Oct. 12, she also has focused her attention on breast cancer awareness. Both Ann Romney and Michelle Obama wore pink dresses at the …

One in 8 American women and 1 in 1,000 American men will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. It’s estimated that more than 2 million people are diagnosed with breast cancer and fight for their lives each year. Breast cancer is difficult to face alone—for both patients and their loved ones. To help in the battle, there are a number of local resources and support groups. Women from the time they are faced with the possibility of a breast cancer diagnosis continuing the entire time that breast cancer remains a personal concern can attend a Reach to Recovery put on by the American Cancer Society. The support group is free and takes place at the East Michigan Office 2413 S Linden Rd Ste A in Flint, Michigan. Contact 877-499-4673…

The Panera Bread Pink Ribbon bagel is back. On Oct. 5, area bakery-cafes, including those in Fenton, will hold a "Go Pink Day" to mark the 11th year of Panera Bread's October fundraising effort for breast cancer causes. Sold in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the signature bagel has raised more than $1.25 million for breast cancer charities nationwide. In participating Panera bakery-cafes in the metro Detroit-area, funds will be donated to the Susan G. John Carpenter wins People's Choice Award at the Livingston County Women's Council of Realtor's Bras 4 A Cause fundraiser Thursday.
Women whistled, cheered, shouted and got their dollar bills ready as 15 local men strutted their stuff down the runway, sporting bras designed by sponsors. That's right - bras. The Fourth Annual Bras 4 A Cause fundraiser for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer was held at Crystal Gardens Banquet Center Thursday night. The Livingston County Women's Council of Realtor's sponsors the event, which raised $6,000 last year. This year, the People's Choice Award went to first-time model, Fenton resident John Carpenter, who participated in memory of his mother, who passed away seven years ago. Carpenter said he got his dance moves from his mom and that he would embarrass himself like this for her.
