Stay Dry, Dress in Layers, Keep Infants Dressed Warm Even Indoors

Oakland County Health Division shares tips for staying safe, indoors and outdoors, in this week's extreme cold weather.

Oakland County Health Division advises residents to take precautions against extreme cold during winter months. As temperatures drop, heat can leave your body faster than normal resulting in hypothermia or frostbite. “While anyone can be affected by extreme cold, infants and elderly are particularly at risk, as are people with diabetes because of impaired circulation,” said Kathy Forzley, Health Division manager/ health officer. “Proper precautions need to be taken to avoid serious health problems caused by cold weather.” Dress properly to reduce the possibility of hypothermia and frostbite. How to Stay Safe in Cold Weather

Think frostbite is something that only happens in the Arctic? With a 25-degrees-below-zero windchill expected for Michigan Tuesday, think again.

A wind chill advisory is in effect for southeast Michigan until 1 p.m. Tuesday—with temperatures heading down to -5 and the wind chil expected to hit 25 degrees below zero. Lake Fenton and Fenton Schools are closed because of the extreme temperatures. The Henry Ford Health System offers some tips to stay safe during this blistering cold weather. Prevention The key to avoiding cold weather injuries is to dress appropriately. This includes layering clothing with a first layer that pulls moisture away from the skin, an outer layer that keeps the elements out and a middle layer that insulates. The perfect meal for a cold day, this stew tastes even better warmed up the next day.

There is nothing I love more than a good stew, so when I was going through all my wedding gifts and organizing my new cookbooks, I decided to take a break and look for a new recipe to try. With this most recent cold snap, I've been craving a hearty stew. My new French cookbook has a wonderful recipe that allowed me to use up a bottle of wine that's been sitting on my counter for months (I'm not a wine person) and also satisfy my tastebuds.
